2013 ND Grades: Offense

Corey Robinson

Wideout Corey Robinson might have the frame to develop into a tight end who can be flexed out, a la Tyler Eifert.

Here is our grading system “on paper” for Notre Dame’s 14 recruits on offense that signed Feb. 6.

Good stuff might disagree with the receivers though. Hunter is the real deal. Kid took home MVP at The Opening last summer and was consistently mentioned as being 1 of the top receivers at the Army All-American game before his injury. Not to mention he tore it up in the state of TX. Fuller was vastly underrated and will be great player for us. I've had Robinson pegged as TE since he committed.

    • Literally a perfect balance of 14 offense players to fill a starting line-up at every position with 3 extra receivers to mix up the formations. Recruiting at it's best.

    • I'm really high on J. Onwaulu. I think that kid is tough and strong. Interested to see how he shakes out. His work ethic seems to be impeccable.

Lou, why such a low grade for the wide outs? Our 2 tight ends average out to a 91.5 24/7 rating and a composite 90.5 rating while our 4 WR average out to a 88.5 24/7 rating and a 89.2 composite. The TE and WR are very close particularly in the composite yet the TE are graded A and the WR B-. And as 69 mentioned Hunter was lights out at the opening. In watching the UND.com videos the past few days it jumped out at me that the coaches seemed very impressed with Fuller as a receiver.

    • We really seemed to address everything we were looking for on offense, maybe just missed a bit on top level wr's but overall a great class on offense.

    • “Now, that training table is in there, Coach [Paul] Longo is one of the best, [offensive line] Coach [Harry] Hiestand is one of the best.

“These guys have everything going for them. They’re coming to Notre Dame at the right time, the right situation with the right staff, where they have everything in place to develop a football player.”

This quote gave me goose bumps. Big uglies up front who are going to be trained and developed the right way, that's exactly what we need to keep us consistently elite.

    • Tennessee Lamb,

Why would you consider a "potential top 10" ranking "low?"

All coaches are going to be impressed with anyone they end up signing. That's why they recruited them in the first place.

It's a good haul, one with maybe even BCS potential, hence the grade. But it doesn't have quite that one aircraft carrier figure like a Floyd like other schools landed. It's a solid group like last year that will need time to develop. Would you have guessed at this time last year that the trio of Brown, Ferguson and Neal would have combined for only four catches as freshmen?

This is strictly "on paper." We'll see how they pan out. Golden Tate wasn't a natural receiver coming in, but he became a superstar. Deion Walker was a four-star considered a deadly complement with Floyd (and John Goodman) and it didn't quite work out. Time will tell. Can't give A's to everything based on how we'd like it to end up. There were some others on that board who were top targets.

    • I completely agree with the grading. When you have a complete "A- level" offensive line coming in, I think they will make every skill player look better. Games are won in the trenches, and a great example of that is the Alabama game.

Love this class, cant wait to see them start in a few years!

    • One article has Fuller at WR, the previous one has him at CB. It will be interesting to see where he ends up. And yet it is Onwualu who is mentioned as someone who could help out on defense.
Flexibility and versatility in the athletes is a hallmark of quality ND teams in the past.
      And now.

    • dave83nd,

Fuller is expected to start off at receiver. I did an earlier piece where I mistakenly listed him at corner ... although it's certainly possible. His coach believes he's equally talented at both areas. It's going to come down to need and where he might be more needed.

    • tough grader on QB.................I think B+ is mor appropriate but we'll see.

    • Lou, I agree, everything is on paper. I also agree about the lack of an "aircraft carrier" (Al Maguire reference?) receiver. Tate and Samardzija became that type of player. My guess is at least one or two of the '12/'13 classes could become that type of player. I don't think I'd give them an A but I'd give them a B+, as a class, based on my thoughts from above. Robinson's inexperience and Hunter's fracture are concerns. I think its hard to make an assessment of the team's receivers last year because of how the offense was handled. Golson was too inexperienced and Eiferts stats seemed to reflect that as he was down in receptions to 50 from 63.

    • It just keeps getting better. The IrishMob13's togetherness is an example of the RKGs that BK has been talking about. This is a key ingredient for a championship caliber unit, just like we saw on the other side of the field January 7th.
