ACC Update (Jan. 17)

Here’s a recap of this week’s action and a look ahead to this weekend in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Junior guard/forward Pat Connaughton and the Irish hope to avoid a 1-4 start in ACC play when Virginia Tech comes to Purcell Pavilion this weekend.

2. Pittsburgh 4-0 (16-1)

• The game of the week took place Monday night in Durham, N.C. when Duke avoided a 1-3 start in the league play with a 69-65 win over Virginia. A late 3-pointer rimmed in to secure the win for the Blue Devils and — assuming they beat North Carolina State on Saturday — avoided an exit from the top 25 in next week’s poll.

• North Carolina dropped to 0-3 in the ACC and are the only member without a league win. The Tar Heels will host Boston College on Saturday after not playing this week.

• Syracuse and Pittsburgh stand atop the conference standings in their inaugural ACC seasons. The Orange are 16-0 on the season and have climbed up to No. 2 in each poll.

• In ESPN bracket expert Joe Lunardi’s most recent projection of the field of 68, six teams (Syracuse, Pittsburgh, Florida State, Virginia, Duke and North Carolina) from the ACC made the cut. That number is tied for most of any conference, despite the league’s slow start.
