Former Iowa State assistant Bob Elliott is the newest member of the Notre Dame coaching staff, according to the Cyclones’ head coach.

Bob Elliott will join former Hawkeyes Bob Diaco and Kerry Cooks on the Irish staff.

“Bobby has informed me that he is leaving our program for a coaching position at Notre Dame. We appreciate his contributions to our program and wish the Elliott family all the best in the future,” said head coach Paul Rhodes.

The defensive coaching veteran likely fills the last vacancy on Notre Dame's staff after three Irish assistants left South Bend for other opportunities after the 2011 season. The Irish previously announced that former offensive intern Scott Booker was promoted to fill one opening, and several reports have indicated Tennessee offensive line coach Harry Hiestand will soon fill the other.

Elliott has spent the majority of his 34-year coaching career in the state of Iowa. He graduated from the University of Iowa in 1976 where he played football and was nominated for a prestigious Rhodes Scholarship. He worked as a graduate assistant with the Hawkeyes for one year and later returned to his alma mater in 1987, where he stayed for 11 years.

During that stint he rose to defensive coordinator and associate head coach under Iowa coach Hayden Fry. While at Iowa he coached current Notre Dame staff members Kerry Cooks (secondary) and Bob Diaco (defensive coordinator). Diaco worked under Elliott as a graduate assistant in 1996 and 1997.

Elliott also made three two-year stops at Iowa State, the most recent of which came to a close Tuesday evening when he informed his players he would be leaving for South Bend.

In 2002, Elliot left his second go-round at Iowa State to join Bill Snyder’s Kansas State staff. While in Manhattan, Elliott was the defensive coordinator for a Wildcats’ defense that regularly finished among the top ten statistically in the country. Kansas State had the country’s best scoring defense and second-best total defense during his first year there. Elliott has also made stops at North Carolina and San Diego State among others.

He is the son of former Michigan coach and Iowa athletic director “Bump” Elliott.

Elliott has coached both linebackers and defensive backs during his career (as well as a little offense with the Tar Heels).
Kelly can decide which of his co-defensive coordinators (Cooks and Diaco) need an extra hand. All three are familiar with one another.

Appears to e a good hire and should be a good fit given his history with Diaco and Cooks. I heard somehting about health issues. Is he fine health wise?
Looks like the coaching staff is complete - assuming Hiestand is the new OL coach. Anyone know whats taking so long on that hire?

The prolonged wait for an official announcement is standard operating procedure for the Irish. Since the George O'Leary fiasco, Notre Dame takes its time putting coaches through a wall of red tape and HR double checks before making any announcement official.
The Elliott announcement is coming only from the Iowa State side at this point. No comment has been made by anyone at Notre Dame.

Well while ND waits to properly vet Elliot and Hiestand, we get to offer meaningless, mostly unfounded opinions! How great is that? Anyway, with what we've been given to read, the Elliot hire seems to be a very good one. Jury's still out on Hiestand

Seems like a great hire but his resume is...odd. He was DC at his alma mater under Hayden Fry and now 12+ years later he is a position coach under a player he coached?

Mr. Elliot seems to be a good hire. I especially like the fact that he has worked for some really good head coaches in Hayden Fry and Bill Snyder. It should also help that he knows Cook And Diaco. I feel better about this hire than I do about the offensive line hire.

I will take Hiestand's resume over Warinner's any day. Hiestand has coached in the NFL and has sent many kids there as well.

Heistand at TeNN the last 2 years. I live in Ktown and had the misfortune to watch his handy work. They couldn't run on any one, except Cincy. The line at TN was really bad.From what I hear, the offensive line players are glad he is gone. Very abusive to players I hear. Hey,if this true, and I believe it is, he fits in with Kelly and how he treated now departed QB Crist. This is not a good hire, in my opinion.
