Notre Dame Numbers In NFL Draft

Notre Dame Fighting Irish

Harrison Smith (left) and Michael Floyd (right) were both taken in the first round last year. Will Manti Te'o and Tyler Eifert repeat in 2013?

With eight Notre Dame players at the NFL Combine this week, the Fighting Irish are bound to improve their recent draft stock.

    • Astonishing when its written out like that. Obviously things are looking pretty good this year and certainly for the future. I'm fairly young (32) so I do remember the late 80's and early 90's where it seemed everyone was talking about first round picks from ND. However I didn't follow ND or recruits as closely as I do now(obviously) so its kind of exciting to watch these guys HS videos one day and before you know it they are getting ready for the draft. I expect this to be a pretty normal Occurance around ND as long as Kelly is around. How sweet that is.

    • Great stuff as always, Lou.
Did Jerome Collins ever catch a pass at ND?

Best game of his career that I remember was his fifth year when he had 3 catches for 45 yards against Stanford (2004). Also had a pair of tackles on the punt team.

      Jason Sapp

    • As a fifth-year senior on the 2004 squad, he caught six passes for 67 yards, with Anthony Fasano and Marcus Freeman (who also tried played as a free agent in the NFL, I think) playing quite a bit as well. John Carlson was red-shirted as a freshman.

Collins enrolled as a freshman receiver in 2000, and one of his best friends is our own Jason Sapp, who enrolled that same year. After moving to defensive end/OLB, Collins moved back to tight end but had a particularly good senior year on special teams. He was involved in two blocked punts, one of them triggering a comeback from a 9-0 deficit at home against Michigan to a 28-20 victory in 2004.

His numbers in the combine were extraordinary. at 6-4, 267, he was timed at 4.53, did 24 reps of 225 bench and, maybe most amazing, was measured with a 40-inch vertical. Jason has always told me what a super athlete Collins was, and if memory serves correct, they led their team to the Bookstore Basketball championship game, where they were favored ... but I don't think Collins could play.

Help me out on that one, Jason.

The great trivia on Collins is he was on injured reserve for the 2006 Indy Colts that won the Super Bowl, and then the next year he was on the practice squad for the New York Giants when they upset 18-0 New England for another Super Bowl title.

That's correct. It was the 2005 Bookstore Championship Game. Collins was drafted and didn't play. And Rhema McKnight was banged up in the Blue-Gold Game and couldn't play. We played Jordan Cornette's team.

Also, his time in the 40 shows how much of a freak athlete he was considering he was 267 pounds at the combine and had a faster time than both of ND's running backs at the combine today.
