Following Notre Dame's 30-13 victory against Oklahoma in a top-10 showdown, the Irish improved to No. 3 in the new BCS standings - just one slot below what would put the program in the National Championship game.
In addition to previous No. 2 ranked Florida dropping in a rivalry game against Georgia, Notre Dame was able to pass up Oregon after defeating a stronger opponent in the Sooners whereas the Ducks topped Colorado, but the difference is merely .001.
Notre Dame faces unranked Pitt at home next and Oregon is set to play USC, so if both programs win, in addition to Alabama and Kansas State, the current top two teams, clinching victories, then the Irish and Ducks would likely swap spots on the list again.
Besides the Oregon-USC game, Irish fans will also be watching to see if LSU can find a way to top Alabama and really shake up the BCS standing if Notre Dame, who is currently a 19-point favorite, defeat the Panthers to become 9-0.
Notre Dame has now tied its highest BCS ranking since the dawn of the BCS era - dating back to 2002 when the Irish were 8-0 after defeating Florida State - and need some things to happen in the program's favor, in addition to staying unbeaten, to finish the 2012 campaign in the top 2 of the standings.
