Notre Dame Suspends Atkinson, Brown

Junior running back George Atkinson III rushed for 555 yards and three touchdowns in 12 regular-season games.

Juniors running back George Atkinson III and cornerback Jalen Brown have been suspended for this afternoon’s Pinstripe Bowl due to a violation of team rules, Notre Dame announced in a statement Saturday morning.

Prior to the announcement, Atkinson tweeted: “For those of you who are wondering I was suspended from today's game for texting friends and family during team meal, as i did all season.” The tweet was quickly deleted.

Notre Dame’s running back situation has been jumbled all season, and head coach Brian Kelly named freshman Tarean Folston the starter at a press conference earlier this week. Atkinson has rushed 93 times this season for 555 yards and three touchdowns after reaching the end zone five times as the team’s third option at the position in 2012. An 80-yard touchdown run against Oklahoma on Sept. 28. highlighted his junior season.

Brown has only played in two games (Michigan and Air Force) this season and has seen freshmen Cole Luke and Devin Butler pass him on the depth chart.

The Irish and Scarlet Knights kick off at 12:05 p.m.
