The Notre Dame men’s basketball team added drama to what was an exciting night of college basketball Saturday, including the Big East Conference. No. 6 Syracuse edged No. 1 Louisville 70-68 on the road to take sole possession of first place in the Big East with a 17-1 overall record and 5-0 league mark. Louisville dropped to 16-2 overall and 4-1 in conference play, sitting tied with Marquette (13-4, 4-1).
At 15-3 overall and 3-2 in league play, the Fighting Irish, which edged Rutgers at home Saturday 69-63 to end a two-game losing streak, are currently fifth in the conference standings behind 4-2 Cincinnati and ahead of Pittsburgh, Rutgers and St. John’s, which are all at 3-3.
Notre Dame senior forward Jack Cooley (19 points, 10 rebounds), sophomore guard Pat Connaughton (17 points, five rebounds) and junior guard Jerian Grant, who posted nine points and tied a career high with 10 assists, talked to Blue & Gold Illustrated about closing out a tight one at Purcell Pavilion after dropping back-to-back games against Connecticut and in New York vs. St. John’s.
The Irish get back to work Monday night at home against Georgetown (12-4, 2-3) at 7:30 p.m. on ESPN.
