Notre Dame, 2012: ‘Check, Please!’

Very nice piece, Lou, building to the crescendo of one final, seemingly insurmountable obstacle. If the script had been taken to Hollywood, the moguls would say, "We've already done 'Rudy.' Let's keep it real."

On top of the points you made regarding differences between 2012 and '64 or '88, there's the reality of the changed landscape in college football. Back then, the balance of power was still more evenly divided, geographically, or if anything, in '64, tipped in ND's favor. Now, we have a situation where the same conference has provided the national champion for six consecutive years. Just one more reason why many thought a season like this was a mere pipe dream for Notre Dame.

Great read as always. It still baffles me that the pundits are still underestimating this team after going 12-0. For the last 20 years or so, give or take, we've had to read and hear about academic standards, recruiting problems, cold weather, lack of star power, independence, out of touch with reality and so on. Now we're hearing about luck, weak schedules, bad coaching by the opposition, and possibly being the 5th or 6th best team in the country. One writer even went as far as to say that Notre Dame would be a 7th place team in the S.E.C.! Well, let's save our cab fare to Miami and just concede the national championship to whoever! And while we're at it, let's not show up to all these awards shows! What's the use? I'm probably more proud of this team for their resolve, class, and hard work on and off the field than I am of their accomplishments on the field. If it only lasts another 43 days, I'll be happy with that. The only people they need to impress is themselves. Obviously, they never will be able to impress the "press."
Onward to Victory...
