Louis 'Nixes' NFL Dreams In 2013

The junior nose guard put a temporary financial windfall on hold and should become a legitimate Outland Trophy candidate in 2013. His fire was also lit last spring.

Super early prediction-Louis Nix III is drafted by the Indianapolis Colts in the 2014 Draft. They need a dominant NT to go in Coach Pagano's 3-4 and he will be their guy.

    • cdarcy,

Pretty amazing isn't it with BYU, especially in this era? However, there was a tentative agreement that the two would meet four times from 2014 and 2020, split between Provo and ND. That would keep the 2-to-1 ratio.

BYU has been accommodating with the 2-for-1 deal. The two schools had a three-year deal from 1992-94, with '92 and '94 at ND and '93 in Provo. They had another three-year deal from 2003-05, with '03 and '05 at ND and the '04 opener in Provo.

This is one of the highlighted points when Kelly refers to "we wanted to make it a college game" when he addresses media questions about why THIS team has had success. Implicit is the word "again" ("we wanted to make it a college game AGAIN"). This very thing(staying for 4 years) is one of the most important ACTIONS that speak to the culture of a program. It shows everyone(fans, recruits and other teammates) that individual sacrifice and the benefits of being at Notre Dame and taking in the entire experience is more valuable than an end goal of a pro career and a couple extra million dollars. And actions speak louder than words. Tuitt is an interesting case we've all thought of. But having seen the half dozen or so players come before him coupled with he himself being inculcated with the witnessing of these every day actions, my money would be on that he doesnt break ranks in 2014 and will stay for his fourth year.

    • coachcft,

That is my initial reaction about Tuitt as well. When he sees guys like Te'o and Nix setting examples, I think there is a quiet infiltration of "if they could do it, so can I."

Like I said before, that summer of 2011 when I talked with Brian Smith for about an hour was pretty revealing. The NFL Network would be on during team meals, and it was like the NFL was the Holy Grail. I remember in the second interview I had with Kelly in February 2010 the comment that stood out was, "I'm really getting tired of always hearing about the next great Notre Dame NFL player." His point was about Notre Dame needing to become the first priority, with the NFL then becoming the residual and natural benefit. If you're good enough, they'll know who you are anyway.

    • Right, but the sticking point, in my opinion, is that Kelly is able to free up the spring semester by running kids through to graduation in 3.5 years. I think it's a FAR greater selling point to the aura of the Notre Dame degree that players in the program are generally on pace to graduate in December of their senior year. That gives those top players and prospects with NFL aspirations the incentive to buy in. Sending players into unencumbered combine prep degree in hand is a big deal.

    • It's getting really hard for me not to think of Nix when I think of who "my boys" are for the Irish. Brady Quinn, Michael Floyd, Manti, next year it's gonna have to be big Lou - dude is the funniest guy on the team even when he's being serious and you can tell his heart is as big as he is. Can't wait to see domination next year.

Jan. 7th is a comin!' GO IRISH!!!

    • The Pitt game showed how much we need Big Lou....I'll be wearing my #9 Jersey in Miami with pride......Love the kid

    • Hope that he has an injury free year.

Yeah, the NFL network being on is another one of those actions. Sounds like ND was a farm system and not more more, as far as football was concerned. This is pretty much what I was refering to what Kelly meant with his implicit "again".

"we made it a college game(again)"

I like Kelly's way, not because it has won more, but because it is much purer from the student athlete perspective. And lou, I would have liked to have been a fly on the wall for the Bryan Smith interview.
