Our front 7 is ridiculously stout this year in controlling that 10 yard zone near the line of scrimmage. As has been said by commentators, our defense flows to the ball very very well. Better than I have seen them do in years. I know we have a plethora of injuries to the secondary however the linebackers are doing an outstanding job helping them out. The corners may not be All-American but their efforts game in and game out earns my respect. Our offense..........very un-Kelly like. Golson has all the talent in the world but I think the jitters are still playing a huge role in him. This next two weeks I think will be a period where Kelly really focuses on him. Cheers to the boys for a game well played. Awesome article Lou.

Notre Dame is not truly "back" until you know when. Ara did it in 1964, Lou in 1988. Defensively, this is championship timber. But as far as becoming a program instead of a team, a consistent performer instead of a flash in the pan, a planet instead of a meteor that swooshes by quickly and then flames out ... it's getting there. There's plenty to do still in a lot of areas. The 4-0 shouldn't be a complete surprise because three were defeated last year handily and the fourth should have been.

Case in point.
Miami beat a good GT team yesterday and could give ND a run for its money.
I am glad there is a bye week here. Time to take stock, consolidate, work on the QB situation, and put the first-third of the season in the rearview mirror -- and happily so.
After that, I don't see a laugher on the schedule. ND is not back as a program until it does what it has been doing every week -- and for the next three or four years.
The road back is a one game at a time process. It takes consistency and, for the coaching staff and fans, nerves of steel.

Thanks Lou. The emergence of so many players on defense, Spond, Farley, Springman, Day, Baratti, Jackson, Shumate, Russell gives us depth up front and resilience from injury on the back end. This is uncharted territory compared to the past 15-20 years!!

Well according to dipstick Mark May, Robison gave ND the game, our defense didn't TAKE the game. May has always been that way toward ND, but when ND has a great defensive effort , he should be able to admit it ,the dipstick. I to believe ND is still on its way back and last nite was a good example of it, the offense is still playing up and down to much as is the special teams, to truly say the team is BACK. The bye-week comes at a great time to clean some things up.
When will Austin Collingworth be ready to be back on the field. Great write-up Lou

Thank you, gentlemen.
Brian Kelly said two weeks ago that Collinsworth will be out for the remainder of the season. He wasn't scheduled to be back until late October the earliest, but it seems they have a lot of confidence going with Motta and Farley as the starters, with Baratti and Salvi the backups. Plus, Dan McCarthy could be fifth-year insurance.
Collinsworth played as a freshman and sophomore, mainly special teams, so the opportunity to preserve a medical red-shirt this year is appealing. This would give him two years of eligibility in 2013 and 2014 instead of one.
