I really wish we could have found a way to keep Michigan on the schedule and drop MSU or Purdue or BC instead.
phi_sig... have you read a book called 'Natural Enemies'? It is strictly about the rivalry between ND and UofM, and it is a pretty good book.
If it is to be believed, basically Michigan has screwed ND every chance they have had in the past. Cancelling series when ND would win a game, until they signed the current contract forbidding them from pulling a 'Michigan' anymore. Blocking ND's bid to join the Big 10 a long time ago. Trying to get the rest of the Big 10 to blackball ND in football... to which MSU and Purdue said 'No Way'. Yost, when he was the Athletic Director there, was a very verbal Anti-Catholic and went on record saying that they don't need to play that f'in Catholic School.
For as 'heated' and 'good natured' as the rivalry has become, it was not that way many years ago. There was pure hatred in Ann Arbor for Notre Dame. I, for one, am glad that ND finally slapped Michigan the way that Michigan has slapped them time and time again. MSU and Purdue, although not as good on the field, have always treated the rivalry with respect and they deserve to stay on the schedule... in my opinion.
