2013 Notre Dame Opponents: Stanford

In the last of our 12-part series, we count down Notre Dame’s 2013 foes from seemingly least formidable to toughest. At No. 1 is Stanford.

  • Shaw is continuing to coach well. But Harbough built this program and this team in particular. Stanford is still very dangerous particularly this year, but will go into slow decline, as I don't think Shaw will keep up the program in the long run.

  • and what would you base that assertion on, Dave? Do you know anything about Shaw that you could share with us? Slow decline? Just a guess, right?

  • I'm sorry, but the way Stanford manhandled Oregon last year was Shaw, not Harbaugh. Shaw may have the recruits from Harbaugh, but teaching them to play the game is on Shaw and his staff.

  • Shaw is a good coach. But with a recruiting class they had this year i think it is very alarming for the next 2-3 years for Stanford. Unless they have a big one this year which would help. Slow decline after this year is not out of the question.

  • So it doesn't matter that they currently have a 95 man roster? I just checked their roster on Stanford's website and they have 95. How many are scholarship and are they counting people leaving this year and the recruits, I don't know. But Stanford isn't hurting for numbers. They had a small class because they didn't have many scholarships.

  • Is it quality vs quantity? It seems that shaw has kept the ball rolling. I mean, harbaugh has been gone 2 years now not one. Shaw is in his 3rd year. I wouldn't start to question his direction until the year after this one. But he appears to be doing a solid job. Pep leaving could hurt in long run as will ertz. Barry sanders sounds like that could make for a long day and I think they still have that outside linebacker. Blood grief, he wreaked havoc last year on our weak side during passing downs.

  • They had a small class because they did not need many this year. Shaw had the best offensive line group in the country ( last years freshmen ) so they should be an excellent rushing team for years. The thing that I want to see is whether they can continue to recruit top defensive players after this group graduates next year. Also, they redshirt many players ( way more than we do ) which helps their program tremendously.

Harbough built the program by recruiting. Finished in top 10 several years.
Look at Stanford recruiting since he left.
    Recruiting is the future.
Coaching present roster is the now.
I've had a bit of a hobby watching Stanford develop over past decade. So, yes, just a guess. But a pretty good one.
