A Brand New Rees

Notre Dame's sophomore quarterback has come a long way since his college football debut last September.

    Dan Murphy

  • This kid does not get enough credit for what he accomplished going four and zero as a true freshman quarterback. I think Crist will start against South Florida but with his history of injury issues its comforting to know that Tommy cancome in and do a good job.

  • If Reese starts against USF and has success, I would be really surprised and Crist would probably not come back for a 5th year. On that note, we would have some great up and coming QB's with running ability in Hendrix and Golson and I like both of them for the future of the program.

I agree. And I would add that there's no chance in HE!! that Golson doesn't see a lot of action this year. Unless our defense is just that good, I don't think you can leave a talent like him on the sidelines.

    GO IRISH!

  • Don't know why, but I just get this feeling that Dayne's the starter. Four key factors are that he's fully healthy, there's an undeniable difference in arm strength, the way he's conducted himself has been exemplary, and he's a senior with a dwindling time window to showcase his talents and help us win. Conversely, there may be a feeling that Tommy's still got time as a 19 year old sophomore.

I know it may not be fair, but when the race is this close, those kind of factors can tend to weigh into a 'human' decision.

No pressure with that statement. Feel very confident in who ever Kelly names the starter. Still believe Crist gets the nod.

  • Lets keep in mind special teams and the defense out scored Utah 7-3 and the defense outscored army 7-3, he did everything in his power to lose the USC game but the defense would not allow it, and the Miami game the defense got a ton of turnovers. Tommy managed 3 games well and looked liked a junior high player against USC. Tommy is a great 2nd option but he is not a #1 Guy yet.

  • If Tommy is able to win the starting job then I would expect the same type of year as if Dayne wins the job a BCS championship contender heading to Standford.

both the young men have the capability to do big things with the offense

  • What percentage of plays called by BK require long range passes... 5-10% maybe? The spread is about lots of short and medium throws that, as Hodges pointed out, require pinpoint accuracy - an area where Crist happens to blow.

Yes, as wjasonp loves to point out, Rees threw a lot of INTs last season. But for the love of god, the kid was 18 and terrified. I think he accomplished amazing things for such a newbie. He's only going to get better.

Sure, Crist has got a rocket, but who really cares? Golson has a better arm than any of them, and he's not even part of the "starter" equation.

  • Every QB throws INTs. Rees threw too many in his four games, but this is not the same 'kid' as last year. He's stronger, smarter and obviously will be even more poised (although last year he was extremely poised for such a young player). I do think Kelly will start Crist, but if he dosen't get it done I don't believe Kelly will hesitate one second before putting Tommy in charge.

  • he did pretty well for a nervous freshman thrust onto the big stage. note that molnar said he throws the short to intermediate with more zip and ACCURACY than crist. and THAT'S the type of throws you'll see the most in a spread......and why he should be BK's choice.

Run the ball. Stop the run. You win, or lose, up front.

  • Wow, the only reason he had to allow the running game to take over the game on that last drive was because he sucked so bad the entire game. If he wasn't the worst excuse for a quarterback against USC we beat them 28-0 or worse, but since he was so bad, Hughes had to take that last drive over. If the defense and running game played like it did when Crist was the quarterback Tommy would have been lucky to go 1-3 and I am giving him the Army game but I think it could have been 0-4. and the accuracy thing is funny because one was 61% and the other was 59% but Rees was not asked to make the throws Crist was asked too.
