A Moment Of Irish Reflection

Notre Dame’s school record nine-game winning streak in the Big East goes far beyond just the number.

    Lou Somogyi

  • I'm hoping for a 1-1 split on this weekend's road trip. Last year's noon start loss at SJ's was a Sunday game, maybe being a Saturday game this time around will change our karma a bit.

    22-9

My luck w/the Irish 18-6...GO IRISH!!!

  • Danbury,

The longest overall winning streak in the program's history is 22, which dates back to the 1908-09 season.

The one in 1953-54 that advanced to the Elite 8 won 18 in a row, the last against No. 1 and defending national champ Indiana, before losing to Penn State.

Since then, the longest winning streak has been 12, both during the 1973-74 season: 12-0 start, highlighted by ending UCLA's 88-game winning streak to move to No. 1, and then 12 more wins to improve to 24-1 before losing the regular season finale at Dayton.

Thanks Lou, here's to breaking all those records. Go Irish!

  • Danbury,

    I refuse to get greedy.

Win the last 3 regular season games, the three in the Big East tourney after the double bye, and then 6 in the NCAA Tournament, that would leave you with 21 straight, one short of the school record.

I'll swap you that for losing the first game next season to fall short of the record.

Realistically, 10 is a nice, round figure to shoot for. The next objective for this program is to thrive in March.

Two goals to shoot for are 1) Playing in MSG on Saturday night for the Big East title, which the program has never done, and 2) Advance to the Sweet 16 in the NCAA, which would be only the fifth time since 1959 the program would have won back-to-back games in the Big Dance.

Lou, I'm beginning to believe that Atkins/Grant will bring ND a BE championship before they leave. Especially with next year being 'Cuse final year in the conference. Brey's never had the athletic backcourt you need to advance in March until now.

I agree, I wasn't really serious. I'm hoping for a Nashville placement in the tourney so I can see them. I live 3 hours from Nashville!

I agree, Simm. That, plus having a heady defender like Martin gives them the kind of defensive presence that has always confounded them when they've been confronted by it.

True Ham. Don't you also see a little bit of Martin's defensive/rebounding tenacity in Conaughton? If he can learn to take a charge like Scott, I can see him stepping into that role when #14 leaves w/little to no drop off.

My luck w/the Irish 18-6...GO IRISH!!!

  • I love the way this team puts team goals ahead of individual stats. Atkins, grant, and connaughtom are very athletic something that notre dame has been lacking in past seasons.

  • This is the finest coaching job I've ever witnessed. Brey should be National Coach of the Year, hands down!

Yes to that also, Simm. He plays with much more assurance than most Freshmen. He exhibits many of Martin's qualities, and already has a better long range touch.

First off Lou, how about our boy Martin vs. WVU the other night huh?

TOTALLY agree with both goals there, Lou. They are realistic, within reach and have never been done before. If I had to choose, I'd take the sweet 16 berth. That would give the players something to tangibly hold onto.

In order to play on Sat night, I feel we'd need to finish as the #2 or #3 seed and pull off another MU victory. Im not sure we could take Cuse again, this time with Melo and in NYC. So, we'd need to take 2 of the next 3.

Plus, getting to Sat nite could mean a #4 seed. I'd take a #4 or #5 seed anyday which means we'd be playing another #4 or #5 seed to get to the Sweet 16. Dare to dream right... :)

  • This is really an Irish team to be proud of.All the great wins they have had this year that everyone including myself had already written off as losses is nothing short of amazing.I truley wish the best for this team.I really think we will be in the NCAA tourney and do very well in it.The best part to this is that we will have almost everyone back for next year plus the youngsters that redshirted. GO Irish!

  • coachcft,

I'm sure what you meant is ND has never played in the Big East title game or advanced to the Sweet 16 in the same year.

Otherwise, it has been in the Sweet 16 numerous times, mainly because from the 1950s through 1970s it was mostly a 22- to 32-team tournament. If you won the first round, you were in the Sweet 16. John Jordan did it four times, John Dee twice, Digger Phelps eight times and Mike Brey once.

But with Digger, all he needed to do was win one game in five of those years. Same with Dee both times and Jordan once. Brey has won one game in the tourney five times.

    Lou Somogyi

  • Yes, thats what I meant Lou. I particularly remember the '87 loss to Carolina in the Meadowlands and the Duke loss in 2003(a DOGFIGHT with David graves and Matt Caroll having good games)... I was referring to playing on SAT NIGHT in the BE Tourney.

We are DUE to catch a break in the tourney....

We are DUE to catch a break in the tourney....

We caught our break in the BE tourney last year when we were the highest seeded team remaining (#2) in the tournament and blew a 14 point 2nd half lead to Louisville. That championship was ours for the taking and we couldn't finish.

Maybe someone will knock off Syracuse this year before the finals.

My luck w/the Irish 18-6...GO IRISH!!!

The 2003 NCAA 2nd round game vs Duke you mentioned was another one we had a lead in w/5 minutes left and lost. We had no answer for Jay Williams that day.

  • I meant THE NCAA tourney, not BE tourney.

Jay was tough, wasnt Dunleavy on that team also? That was an excellent game.
