Also, let's not forget that he loved his visit a lot. He clearly has always liked nd. To say that his father pushed him there and that he's going to transfer is far cry from the fact that the kid genuinely likes nd. He obviously has friends at ua and he was feeling homesick. Sometimes a parent is needed to help the kid make the right decision, even when they're too scared to take that leap.

I'm glad we signed the kid and hope he does ND nation proud. I have to admit I expected to come back on and see he chose ASU or U of A, and I wouldn't have been mad. ND benefitted from the same exact scenario with Gunner Kiel, only he actually verballed before flipping once he got homesick and realized just how far he was about to move.

Recruiting this year brings to mind the news and outcry over Whitney Houston's death. If any of you haven't seen, facebook billboards and ads are popping up with names of dead soldiers and their accomplishments and saying you haven't heard of them because flawed dead celebrities get all the news coverage. Well it works in the reverse with the recruiting process. Thousands of kids transfer, renege on decisions, and change their minds about college choice every semester. You just don't hear about any of them except the ones with athletic scholarships. I understand the anxiety attack that comes with the final decision to move states away, or pick a certain location. Add that to the nerves of just moving away to college in general and immature (or even mature) 17-18 year olds are going to hesitate. Add into that coaches in your ear, the idea of disappointing coaches, family, and fanbases and it's clear why many kids go back and forth. Sure some just jump for reasons that aren't defensible, but others don't. At least Davonte didn't commit then change his mind, and he had a family tragedy that further clouded his judgment.

Recruiting is 70% staying true to your word and commitment, and 30% changing your mind/following your heart to where you're going to spend the best years of your life. Yes, you shouldn't sign a LOI or verbal if you have doubts, but you have to go where you feel you can make the best of your life. Hopefully he doesn't decide before the move to South Bend or during the doldrums of his first year that he misses home too much. Of course, stardom on Saturdays could make him much more at home

Classy move on his part to go to each class and say he was sorry.
