Adrian Dantley's new job

  • Interesting read from the folks at Deadspin.

Why Is One Of The NBA's All-Time Greatest Scorers Working As A Crossing Guard Now?

Day after day, Adrian Dantley hangs out on a street corner in his hometown, like some cliché of a pitiful ex-ballplayer years after his athletic prime. But Dantleys a crossing guard.

  • My brother was at ND with AD. Great guy.

  • Real good read. The one thing I question is Adrian leaving Notre Dame after his junior year after a "squabble" with Digger. I can't really recall that occurring. Not saying it couldn't have happened because Digger is pretty easy to get into a squabble with — and Adrian had a pretty powerful personality too — but they struck me as having a pretty good relationship. About the only players that I can think of that Digger might have deferred to more were John Paxson and maybe David Rivers.

Now with Kelly Tripucka, another No. 44, the squabbles were legendary. The joke on campus was that Kelly was really Tripucka's last name because Phelps would always be yelling, "Jesus Kelly."

  • AD was one of the great ones to play for ND - really appreciated his hustle. Calling someone who is frugal 'cheap' is a cheap shot - just my opinion. GO IRISH!

'Cheap' is a cheap shot. How many stories do we read about great athletes that end up pennyless shortly after their careers are over? I didn't read comments here from past teammates who had bad things to say, only team Owners or GM/Presidents. He was one of the greatest basketball players who ever lived and he is happy in his own skin. Nice job!

  • Adrian Dantley could have left school after his sophomore year, but he returned and played great. I remember how I learned that AD was leaving. I went to high school across the street from ND and was on the track team. One spring day we were running through the campus and I spied AD driving a Corvette. I knew that his having that car indicated that he was not coming back. Who knows, but based on the story, it might have been the nicest car that he ever has had.

After Austin Carr, AD was the best to ever play at Notre Dame. He was great in college except for an errant pass at the end of the NCAA tourney game against Michigan.

“Notre Dame? Relevant? Of course. Call me in 90 years, and I’ll give you the same answer.” Neal Pilson, former president of CBS Sports
