For you older folk, right now I feel like the day the "Miracle On Ice" USA Hockey team did when it had to still play Finland for the gold medal in the 1980 Olympics at Lake Placid, NY.
Defeating the greatest, most dominant team on earth, the Soviet Union, which had crushed the NHL All-Stars, a couple days earlier, there was unbelievable euphoria that Team USA even made it to the medal round. What was astounding was that a loss to Finland I don't think even would have qualified them for the bronze.
This entire 2012 football season was like defeating the Russians in 1980. Now, some might say Alabama represents dominant Russia, but to me it's more like FInland, the final obstacle to gold.
If Notre Dame loses, this would still be remembered as one of the special seasons/accomplishments in the program's history, but there would still be that lingering hurt of not quite finishing, or missing an opportunity ("There is no greater reason for remorse than a missed opportunity," Lou Holtz said).
A victory, and this Notre Dame team will be remembered by many ND fans the way the 1980 USA Olympic team is in collective American sports lore.
