All I Am Saying......Is Give Rees A Chance.

  • I may be the lone person in this boat, but I find it sad/hypocritical that performance on the field equates to punishment. Every Notre Dame player, whether he rides the bench or be our main weapon, needs to be punished/mentored in the same way for whatever trouble he gets himself into. As Notre Dame fans, we seem to spend an awful lot of time preaching morals. We talk about how Notre Dame does it the right way. The student in student-athlete actually means something. Catholic values and such.

Now, as of this moment, Notre Dame has yet to punish Rees for his incident yesterday. However, the message board has already led him to the gallows. He's been branded a tool. A dumb drunk. An idiot. He sucks. His entire family has a drinking problem. And BK has no choice now but to appoint Golson as the savior of Notre Dame.

The response after Floyd's numerous issues with drinking? Give him a chance. Young man needs a mentor. Let's pray that Res Life goes easy on him. Hope Floyd learns from this small mistake. This is nothing - I drank in college.

Now, some of you are going to argue that Rees is facing a felony for battery on law enforcement or something to that nature. Ok. Floyd got drunk and got behind the wheel of a 3,000-pound vehicle. Again. And again. Yet, with Floyd, we hoped for maturation, leniancy, forgiveness, and compassion. With Rees...well...this is our chance to write him off. Why? Because he's not as athletic as Floyd? Not as gifted on the field?

And that's what is sad about the whole situation.

We are so wrapped up in the football-only aspect of Notre Dame (all under the "good Christian" disguise) that some of us don't even realize we're crucifying a kid based on his inability to hand us a championship. And let me stop any assumptions before they start - I don't want Rees as Notre Dame's quarterback. That plan didn't work. Someone else needs a shot. But why the hate? Why hand him over to the Taliban because he got drunk one night and acted like a fool? All you who mentioned drinking when you were in college after Floyd's issues...why no defense for Rees? All you Floyd sympathizers - lose your religion?

Or is it different because one is a record-breaking, first round draft choice while the other didn't perform to our expectations? That's the only reason I can think of. I hope Rees gets a chance to finish his degree. I hope he gets to stay on the team as our most experienced back-up. If he does need help with alcohol issues, I hope he gets that. I should hope we give him that chance.

  • No your are not the only one and I hope the boat is big enough for the both of us! I can almost guarantee you that the support for TR will fail in comparison. Actually there are people who can't wait to come on here and congratulate TR. Sad indeed. I know I was one hoping for Floyd to play again but first get his degree. I am also hoping that TR gets a chance. You hit the nail on the head.

  • Well stated, IFR.

My first thought about seeing the arrest was this was going to be, for many, the epitome of Schadenfreude, the German word that means delighting in the misery of someone else.

  • IFR,

First of all, great post. Secondly, I think your opinion is spot-on. There's no question that a major talent will get the nod more times than a 2nd stringer, or as in TR's case, a QB that just doesn't "fit" this offense - per the ND Faithful. I'm not pointing fingers here, as I am of the opinion that TR doesn't fit this offense either, but at the end of the day, a fair shake is deserved and we've only heard one side of the story so far. I feel bad for Tommy, as he is a young man that has had to take a lot of crap from critics, fans, fellow students, etc. Now he has another tremendously difficult mountain to climb, the least of which is going to be Mom & Dad. That's never fun for a 19 year old, especially the 19 year old starting QB at Notre Dame

Both players need are going to have to pay for their mistakes but I wish them luck and God's speed nonetheless.

  • I don't think anyone should be lambasting Rees for this but, behind closed doors, I think most are breathing a sigh of relief--especially Brian Kelly.

This has further repercussions for ND in generaly, though...yet more negative publicity for us. Not a good year.

  • My brother was charged with battery of a police officer for a similar thing where he was at a party and the cops showed up because it got too loud and when the cops showed up they just started pepper spraying the whole area - kind of a "clear the area" message. My brother was not resisting and a cop walks right up to him and pointed a canister right up to his face ...so my brother slapped the can away to protect his face from taking a direct shot. The cop admitted this at the hearing, but said he was not going to spray him. Knowing my brother - he probably had beer muscles on and said something like "get that ish out of my face" Then two other cops came over and basically beat the crap out of him.

My brother pleaded "guilty-no contest" as he had no money for a lawyer and his appointed counsel told him fighting it would make the penalty worse.

He got 10 days in county, 40 hrs of community service and had to pay a fine.

I am not sure about Indiana law in this situation, but if Tommy has to go to jail - ND probably has to expell him.

Carlo should get off with a warning unless he furnished the alcohol to minors.

  • Raise your hand if you've never had the cops show up to a college party to "keep it down" or if you've never run from a party at under 21 when the cops are at the door. Glass houses.

  • I'm on board with you.. Innocent until proven guilty. The assault charge is always overstated and dropped most of the time.. If thats the case, he'll get punished, hopefully some treatment or therapy if there is a problem there, and he'll get right back into the mix of things.

I don't want Tommy to be our starter like most of you, but I want Golson to earn the job, not get it by default.

  • I absolutely agree with your glass houses comments. I've lived in and broken too many of them to want to be these young men's judge. However, I've seen enough of life to know that my behavior as a youth was wrong, foolish, self destructive and hurtful to those around me. Alcohol and drug abuse damage the social fabric, undermine the family structure, give rise to violence and child abuse, etc. Sadly, as a society, we continue to encourage substance among the young by the "that's my boy" syndrome.

I know that suggesting that drinking is a major social problem instead of a right of passage and a perfectly fine way of passing time is unpopular. That doesn't make it untrue. Matt James, and many thousands like him would be alive today were it not for the way we subtly encourage young men to imbibe. Many even laugh with their sons watching the videos of drunken girls baring their breasts on spring break. I suppose it can seem funny, at least to some, and until you discover it's your daughter in the picture. It's not altogether unwise to remember that alcoholism and drug addiction are completely preventable, not through prohibition, part deaux, but simply through providing better guidance to the young. Saying it's inevitable that many will behave this way or that might be true, but it ignores the fact that many others can be led into better behavior.
