All Quiet On The Irish Front

Notre Dame’s football program remains in a limbo state this weekend while head coach Brian Kelly attempts to find resolution on his future.

  • What do you think happens Lou?

  • I think it's time to put our list together Louie.
    Franklin, Shaw or Strong.
I'd be happy with any one of the three. I'm certain 2 of them are available.

  • If Bk is making a second interview, I think he is gone if not to the eagles some where else. I do think Mr. Swarbrick will find a very capable replacement. I don't like the idea of coach Diaco as head coach aka Bob Davie. ND has to find a successful head coach. ND keeping Mr. Swarbrick as AD is as important if not moreso than coach Kelly.

  • Very disheartening! I can't imagine ND could be a steppingstone to another coaching position. I believed Kelly could be the best since Ara. Wow!

Jimbo, do you seriously think they are any different? All 3 locked in with their Programs because the Programs were willing to meet their demands --- THIS YEAR. If the NFL or another Big time Program locks into one of those guys, then do you really think Stanford, Vandy or Louisville will be able to fend them off without massive financial commitment to the Program?

Not sure how locked in Franklin is at Vandy. Does anyone know? I would think he'd be the cheapest and the best. Love his passion.

  • I am getting the feeling he is gone. What a steep fall since last week at this time.

  • So Lou...what is your best bet on the candidates?...I bet BK is gone...interesting Kelly and O'Brian turned it down...they truly care about their schools and are committed to the long term...best get rid of BK now so we can move on and find someone like the statued coaches that really love ND and want to stay forever...when I first read BK started in politics I kind of new he was a liar type of guy...hopefully JS is talking to people so ND can annouce a new coach ASAP...what BK has done is not forgivable in my opinion...the reasons for this saga are not a cause for this....he has no class or integrity..

  • Jimbo, you need to ask why any of those kind of coaches would leave their secure situation to come to Notre Dame when the national coach of the year left a ton of talent, including a killer recruiting class to go to the Philadelphia Eagles. Does anyone seriously think that Brian Kelly's plan was to use ND as a steppingstone to the NFL after three years? How naive are we? This is not the kind of situation that is going to attract the caliber of coaches you are describing who have bargaining power to move to situations where the football program and administration are on the same page. If you're looking for replacements, forget the A-list. Or the B-list. We're right back where we were after Holtz, after Davie, and after Ty.

  • big zoo,

I'm of the this-too-shall-pass ilk — just like the "my guys" item — and believe that Brian Kelly will be back at Notre Dame in 2013. I wouldn't necessarily bet the house on it, though.

So your like the rest of us...don't really trust BK at this point..

  • I'm sorry to say this but Brian Kelly has no honor. He knows what this will do to ND. But just like his leaving Cincinnati, right before a bowl game, in a "bind" - he just doesn't seem to care.

So instead of creating a new era at ND he will leave a 12-1 team in complete disarray.

  • With all due respect, Ham, you seem to be engaging in the kind of conclusion jumping you typically advise against. You don't know what demands have been made, or what have been refused, or if any demands have been made at all.

Kelly took Notre Dame unbeaten and a win away from the national championship as is. Are jumbotrons and field turf really the difference in closing the gap with Alabama?

If Kelly wants raises for himself and his staff, great. They've earned it. But if this is negotiating tactics, I'm wondering what ends will truly justify the means.

Yes, Franklin's salary is more than Brian Kelly's and they locked him into a long term contract (I can't recall the duration). They also committed to a big facilities upgrade and bunch of other things. But still, that just hold him for now. His stock is rising and he is only 40 years old. This is Kelly's moment.

Coach Strong would be a dream coach at ND maybe better than BK. If we have to have a new coach I would really like to be able to keep all the assistant coaches we have now. We shall see how this works out.

  • BUT what and WHO is talking tp the recruits- is this not in its bare essence simply freaking RUDE! so we all know he is interviewing- what is the problem with the university starting a real search- acknowledging this- I mean I have no good answers but...seriously silence is the last thing this program needs

  • It is difficult for me to accept Kelly wants to move on to the next challenge when there is 'unfinished business' here.

I think this is a power struggle - it seems to me that Kelly always got his way everywhere all the time. And that is not the case at ND. It is a different experience. And many of us cherish the differences.

And I respect loyalty but self interest is not bad.

But three years is not long enough.

John, do you think Kelly would be willing to scorch the Program on the hope that the Eagles may choose him? Seriously? ND knows exactly what Kelly wants.

At this point, the Eagles may just a diversion. Fear the Program we're hearing nothing about. Texas.

  • BORGHI,

I didn't say I don't trust him. He has some decisions to make where I have no idea what is going on in his mind or what is developing at Notre Dame behind closed doors. I can't reach any firm conclusion based on that. We'll see how it shakes out and what spin will be taken.

Strong already makes about the same as Kelly and Louisville is stepping that up big time.

    Irish Cedar

  • Cedar, I'm as likely to believe Kelly wants to coach in the NFL, based on reports, as I am to believe that he's hard-balling Notre Dame's admin, based on reports. Everything falls into fodder's churn at this point.

You're right, John, about my jumping to conclusions, but I've gotten tired of everyone else jumping to theirs, so I've decided to jump to my own. And mine are based on experience with the ND administration that goes back to a time before you were born, so I carry some bitterness as well.

We have absolutely no idea what's going on here. We shouldn't be saying a damn thing. But, as long as everyone else is, then I'm playing the game, too.

FWIW, do you think the issue is about "closing the gap" with Alabama, or looking for responses to issues that have been on the table for possibly three years, or maybe lack of follow through on promises made, but not acted upon? Again, I have no idea. But, I don't think Brian Kelly is an impulsive man, nor a foolish one. And I don't think he's seriously interested in coaching the Philadelphia Eagles. My best guess is this is a message. If things haven't changed, next year, it will be three NFL interviews. Or, what I would really hypothesize is that he has Trace Armstrong ask Texas if they're ready to give Mack Brown a spot in administration. You can shoot that one down, but I'll come up with a half dozen others that would keep Brian Kelly in the college coaching ranks, and give him another shot at Coach of the Year.

As for the end justifying the means, what are the means, so far? One interview, one recruit moving on who is doing exactly what he always wanted to do, and a disgruntled fan base. He really hasn't put much on the line as far as I can see.

John, you raise good questions, and I don't intend my tone to reflect the slightest bit of ill will toward you. Quite to the contrary. But, there are underlying issues here, and even if Brian Kelly is totally motivated by self-interest here, which I doubt, those issues have been endemic to ND since, well, forever.

I'm also told that Strong is involved in a liabilty law suit at Louisville. Don't know the details but apparently it's bad enough
    to be a disqualifier.
Let me add a name. Jim Haslett was openly interested several years ago. Redskins defensive coordinator.
