  • I'm fine with Kelly leaving as long as we get Lou Holtz as our coach.

  • There is no advantage for Jack Swarbrick to go public with any discussion or proposals that he and Brian Kelly have had with each other. Their ultimate conclusion as to whether or not to go forward as a team will be forthcoming but all the details of how they get there may never be known. Swarbrick may have asked for time to decide or get clearance and Kelly may continue to listen to others until Swarbrick responds with his final offer. I also feel Kelly will return because he likes the job abd it is in his best interest to return. He doesn't have another job offer yet. There are always jobs opening but many more people chasing them then chasing you. Here's a nightmare scenario. Swarbrick balks, Kelly walks. USC calls.

Coach Strong would be a dream coach at ND maybe better than BK. If we have to have a new coach I would really like to be able to keep all the assistant coaches we have now. We shall see how this works out.

You're never going to keep the staff intact with a new head coach. Charlie Strong, for example, is successful working with his own guys. He's not going to ditch most of them. If Kelly leaves (I look for this to be worked out today and an announcement that he stays either tonight or tomorrow) Strong with bring most of his own guys with him. It's just how it works.

Not sure how locked in Franklin is at Vandy. Does anyone know? I would think he'd be the cheapest and the best. Love his passion.

Cedar, I'm as likely to believe Kelly wants to coach in the NFL, based on reports, as I am to believe that he's hard-balling Notre Dame's admin, based on reports. Everything falls into fodder's churn at this point.

But, see there's the rub. Does Kelly REALLY want to coach in the NFL? Or does he want to be paid like an NFL Coach? Kelly is not from the NFL Coaching tree so he cannot feel that is his natural place to be. There are many college coaches making more than many NFL coaches.

The NFL is the #1 sport in America. College Football is #2. (I believe college may overtake the NFL some day). They compete with each other.

To me, this is about creating the conditions to win, and compensation. That's it.

You're right, John, about my jumping to conclusions, but I've gotten tired of everyone else jumping to theirs, so I've decided to jump to my own. And mine are based on experience with the ND administration that goes back to a time before you were born, so I carry some bitterness as well.

We have absolutely no idea what's going on here. We shouldn't be saying a damn thing. But, as long as everyone else is, then I'm playing the game, too.

FWIW, do you think the issue is about "closing the gap" with Alabama, or looking for responses to issues that have been on the table for possibly three years, or maybe lack of follow through on promises made, but not acted upon? Again, I have no idea. But, I don't think Brian Kelly is an impulsive man, nor a foolish one. And I don't think he's seriously interested in coaching the Philadelphia Eagles. My best guess is this is a message. If things haven't changed, next year, it will be three NFL interviews. Or, what I would really hypothesize is that he has Trace Armstrong ask Texas if they're ready to give Mack Brown a spot in administration. You can shoot that one down, but I'll come up with a half dozen others that would keep Brian Kelly in the college coaching ranks, and give him another shot at Coach of the Year.

As for the end justifying the means, what are the means, so far? One interview, one recruit moving on who is doing exactly what he always wanted to do, and a disgruntled fan base. He really hasn't put much on the line as far as I can see.

John, you raise good questions, and I don't intend my tone to reflect the slightest bit of ill will toward you. Quite to the contrary. But, there are underlying issues here, and even if Brian Kelly is totally motivated by self-interest here, which I doubt, those issues have been endemic to ND since, well, forever.

Yes there are 'underlying issues' here - and it's ripe for speculation - that "have been endemic to ND since, well, forever." Well I'm jumping into the pool. When this program hit 'success' on the field(and this year surely qualifies) the age old 'endemic' battle flares up. So what is that? Let me touch on one of them. When you say Stanford one thinks EDUCATION and, oh yea, they have a pretty good fb team if you're into fb. When you say Notre Dame one thinks FOOTBALL and yes ND does have a quality educational program. What is the 'brand' by which these institution promote themselves - just ask the average guy out there - do your own survey I have. Coach Leahy was very successful on the field but he was no darling with ND Adm - and as Lou S pointed out even the 'legendary' Rockne had his 'confrontation' with ND under Rev Matthew Walsh. ND, as the university, always keeps a wary eye on the 'success' of its 'brand' - which , I think, they've never totally bought into. AD Swabrick hired Coack BK - neither are saying much - but I'd bet they know the issue(s) between them. As for the recruits, if they bought into ND for the right 'brand' reasons all should be well there. GO IRISH!!

  • I think the one telling factor is ZERO response from the ND administration. You would be hearing things if this was not a known commodity with them. They knew about this prior to us and would (I think) be making statements if they were petrified like we seem to be or had a defense. Do you think it a coincidence that Swarbick (on vacation as it were) nor any others has made a peep? Do you think they were completely caught off guard and feel there is no need to comment on it?

  • One thing I know is there is a tremendous amount of money on the line, and ND cannot afford to go back. I would also take Mac Brown if Texas wants Kelly, Brown is a great coach and the longhorns would be crazy to let him leave. I really don't think Kelly would last many years at Texas, I know too many Alums and they are spoiled, arrogant, for the most part. Kelly would be best to stay where he is for a couple more years, prove this year was real, then go to the NFL if he has to. He might want to talk to Nick Saban and get the real scoop on the NFL.

  • Even with poor to average coaches these past two decades, recruiting good to top 10-15 classes was always doable. The only failure was the occasional staff not commiting to an all in recruiting philosophy (Ty). Simply put, Notre Dame can always get enough talent to win 9 or 10 games.

A talented coaching staff led by an experienced head coach who is smart, leads and is tough is what it takes to get those 9-10 wins and the occasional NC run.

As good as Bama' was/is, we made it easy for them as our offensive and defensive schemes and strategies sucked. Losing is OK, but to revert to the way we played in 10' and 11' is unacceptable and showed we did not know how to prepare and compete on the big stage. The defense performed like the 10' Navy game and the offense, well, they lost 5 games each year - nuff said.

My point? Many staffs/teams, with their own personnel, could have held Bama' to 42 points and scored 14.

Where was Notre Dame? A shake-up may not hurt as bad as you think, just ask Ara.

This is a joke right? Mack Brown should not even have a job, some of you people are truly unbelievable, WOW.
