    I don't think that Wood is a happy camper so I think that he is gone. A dumb move for him, but I sense that he has an attitude problem and it is better that he goes.

    This post sounds like sour grapes. He has worked hard and won some games for the Irish. It seems like he will graduate, and with the average RB career lasting only 5 yrs in the NFL, you cannot blame him for leaving injury free with low miles and a 3rd-4th round projection if he does well at the combine/workouts. He will be a solid 2nd RB for most any team in a few years.

    Penick -- just a random question.

    You mentioned that you think Wood is overrated. No comment from me on that, one way or the other, though I have found the kid something of an enigma. Just as I have many other college players.

    But his career numbers will probably surpass those of your namesake. Who, then, in your opinion, will have been a better back -- Cierre Wood or Eric Penick?

    Looks to me pretty much like a toss-up.

  • Enigma is accurately put. I also happen to think Cierre is a weebit insecure and misunderstood by many. I think he is a great teammate and is genuinely Theo's biggest fan.

    I would like to see him come back to have a true big year, but not in his "I TOLD ya so" type body language, but in a more mature way. Plus, he needs to learn how to pass block.

  • I would love to have Wood back. I have no incite whatsoever as to his plans or the staff's plans for him but losing him is not a plus.

    As for Carlisle, he was certainly a top recruit. I saw him only briefly when at USC, but he was playing as a freshman. His hhigh school vids may be somewhat deceiving because next fall he will be 20 years old (with 3 years left) while he was only 17 in his high school videos.

    I love McDaniel but, ex Wood, next year we really have nobody with a real tailback resume. Atkinson, Mahone, James, Neal? and McDaniel is a basket of promise but it doesn't come with any security blanket.

    Just to be clear, psdo, my comments, for what they are worth, were made after viewing some USC footage of Carlisle. They were part of last year's USC-Colorado game highlights, but showed Carlisle carrying on at least a half dozen occasions. I found the clip by searching this (B & G) site.

    Carlisle looked very smooth, but, generally, there was no one around him. The running lanes he had were enormous.

    And I agree with your sense of next year. The question is, is there really a back as good as Wood or Riddick in the group coming back? If there is, I don't know about it.

    Not likely, but that doesn't mean the running game can't be very effective, for different reasons. One, would be the continued improvement of Golson, and how that will impact defensive alignments and preparation. Two, would be improvement of the offensive line. It's premature to say that will, in fact, be the case, but it is certainly a possibility.

    Attitude problem?? I don't blame him one bit, he paid for his early mistake!!

  • One other thought here, and this is completely from left field, but one has to wonder how good a running back KeiVarae Russell might be. No, I am absolutely not suggesting a move. But, I can't help but speculate that if he was supposed to be a better RB/slot than DB, then he might be pretty darn good. One thing's for sure -- he's got some jets.

    Ham, the same thought crossed my mind, especialy given the CBs we have coming in plus Low Wood back for 2 more years.

    Here's a more sacrilegious thought: Jaylon Smith is one of the best High School tailbacks in the country..and we have 4 other LB recruits...and..no enough of that.

    Penick vs. "a superior USC team" broke off a 85 yard run . USC was suppose the faster team, Penick left them in the dust.

    Everyone knows what Wood did against "a superior OU team"

    BTW Penick's run racks on one of my top 5 all time plays in the last 50 years

    Yes, Penick and Wood grade out pretty closely. At least up to this point.

    The thing about Penick's run is that it was seen as a one-play rebuttal to the six TD's Anthony Davis had scored against ND in the 72 game -- a game that started out 24-0 in ND's favor, but finished as a 55-24 loss. Two of those Davis TD's were on kick returns, I believe.

    The thing that made Penick's run so great was that it involved text-book execution. The springing and downfield blocks were all there, and, as you pointed out, once Penick got into the secondary he ran away from USC's DB's. Not by much, but with a strong enough finish to thwart them.

    It was about as close to a perfect play as ND has ever run.
