An Oregon-style attack?

  • We've all been pretty obsessed over the QB position in recent months, and rightfully so. But I'm hoping that the QB isn't the centerpiece of this offense—at least not through the air. It's unquestionable that the strength of the offense lies in its running backs/slot receivers and its offensive line/tight ends. I'd love to see BK and Co. unveil an Oregon-style attack...a fast break, stretch the field, eat up gobs of yardage on the ground, kind of offense. I think we have the personnel to do it, especially if Everett Golson or Andrew Hendrix are behind center.

    I think the trio of Cierre Wood, Theo Riddick and GAIII could be a really special group, given the strength of the offensive line and the QB providing a read option threat.

    Thoughts?

  • I would like a mixture of a Texas Tech air raid and Oregons offense. I love seeing the ball thrown for big yards.

  • as an old (63) school smashmouth football guy, i don't mind seeing the pigskin in a tight spiral. really, i don't. but i hope bk wants to go more vertical this year if he's winging it instead of those little dumps or quick slants. you stretch the field better by going north and south. and i've never seen too much positive yardage if the running back thinks going east and west for 15 yards is a "gainer". you don't ask opposing defenses for respect, you get that by jarring some fillings loose and decleating them. i love pancakes, so let's see plenty of those......flex

  • The key to the Oregon offense is their QB's ability to read the defense on the run (after the snap) and execute. Executing includes handing off, pitching, running and throwing, not just making the right read.

    When he makes the right read, his RB's run through gigantic holes, his receivers catch the ball on the run with room to move, or he runs to daylight. It is a brilliant design, unless the QB can't execute it. Then it turns into old fat guys playing basketball. (I'm an old fat guy who has trouble remembering when I could run the floor. No insults intended to others.)

    IMO, there are too many key elements that Rees cannot execute.

    Golson and Hendrix are the teams best hope.

    Can Martin and Kelly coach it? History Pre-ND says yes.

    I would be anxious for the season to begin if I did not believe that these coaches and players need every minute of preparation that they can get. My goodness, how good they could be.

    We couldn't move the ball at all against Stanford and FSU, the two best defenses we played.

    I agree. I'll add that in order to stretch the field, you also need an arm at QB capable of making more than little dumps or quick slants.

    That said, I have confidence we will see more vertical attacks this year.

  • we are no where near the kind of offensive attack Oregon displays. Maybe someday we will be, but in my opinion its not even close at the moment. But i would love to see it happen, but we need to figure out the QB position and get that settled. If we are going to run the spread then it would be great to do it as well as Oregon. As long as we start winning i don't care if its the single wing,lol.

  • Im a big fan of "Do a few things REALLY well" rather than do a bunch of things half well.

    I think that seems to be what we are faced with. I do think that a faster paced offense will benefit us offensively with snapping the ball more and spreading out touches to GA III, Cierre, Theo, Tyler, DD, Devonte.

    BUT, it could backfire.

    Meaning, our defense(ANAEOREXIC in the secondary) might barely be taking off their helmets and a few quick 3 and outs will have them right back out there.

    Plus, I truly think that while its a nice idea here from the OPer, its just talk b/c Kelly doesnt seem to be too close to ready to take his hands off the wheel this much.
