Ara Parseghian Feted By NCFAA

Manti Te’o owned The Home Depot College Football Awards Show, but former Notre Dame head coach Ara Parseghian enhanced his own icon status.

  • Great read Lou. Ara is a special person. Its amazing what his teams accomplished.

  • Do any of you old timers out there remember how Ara was labeled as "Can't win the big one?" For all of his achievements and his 2 NCs people simply expected perfection from him. It's the reason why both he and Holtz left ND. They were simply burned out by the relentless expectations to always win, never lose and always figure in the NC picture.

It's nice today that we can reflect back to those days and see just how much he truly accomplished at ND.

God love you Ara. I'm lucky to have witnessed your time at ND. Glad you're finally seen for the multitude of accomplishments, instead of the VERY few failures, and recognized for the unmatched excellence you gave us. God Bless.

  • NEEDAVIXEN,

Yes, I remember those times very well. He would say years later that he discovered the "Big One" is always the one you lose. Even in 1966 when he won the national title, people criticized him for not "winning the big one" with the 10-10 tie at Michigan State. When he won the next week 51-0 at Pac-8 champ USC to clinch the title, that really wasn't "a big one."

This came about mainly because ND was 0-4-2 against USC from 1966-72, and also lost three straight to Purdue from 1967-69.

Before Ara came in, ND had lost 3 of their last 4 to Navy, four in a row to Northwestern (which he coached), eight in a row to Michigan State, 5 of 6 to Purdue and 4 of 6 to Pitt. When he beat all those teams except Purdue (against whom he was 6-5) with remarkable consistency or even ease, they no longer were "big ones."

In three of his last four bowls, though, he did beat three unbeaten No. 1-ranked teams.

I remember that very well. I thought then that it was a dirty shame and still do. Ara is one in a million and thank God he was put on this earthso he could touch so many peoples lives and make them better.

I for one, have to admit that watching his speech at the ESPN awards, my cheeks were wet. God Bless you Ara and may you live forever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • WHY MANTI SHOULD WIN THE HEISMAN:

    1. He hasn't had a bad series, while the other two finalists have had bad games. This has directly resulted in ND being undefeated and the other two schools not
    2. He is a consumate leader and team player who best embodies the traits the award is supposed to represent
3.ND has twelve wins against FBS teams. KS has 10 and A&M 9
    4. Manti's interceptions are the equivalent or more at his position of the other guys' stats
    5. The same guys who said ND couldn't win 10 games, couldn't beat Okla, couldn't beat USC etc etc (hello Mark May. Ricky Reilly, are you relevant any more???) are the guys saying he can't or shouldn't win the Heismann
    6. Just to invalidate all the electioneering ESPN and others are doing for Johnny touch football
    7. Like Bertelli and the rest, he had a season that transcended football. He is the face of college football, not just ND, or at least the face everyone would rathe put on it than all the scandals, etc.
