Arizona Cardinals brass talk about Floyd

  • Cardinals general manager Rod Graves:

    Opening Statement:
(RG): “Well thanks to everyone. We are happy to announce our selection of Michael Floyd, wide receiver from Notre Dame.”

On the obvious excitement about the pick:
(RG): “I’m excited. I’m excited. We are very delighted with Michael. We spent a lot of time with him and obviously he has all the tools and the potential to be a very exciting player. We are excited to have him.”

  • Cardinals head coach Ken Whisenhunt:

On what it was that tilted the scale on the player they were going with:

(KW): “Well I think one of the things that was apparent this year, not just necessarily for our team but in the league, is how important field position has become with the new kickoff and the touchbacks and your starting field position. When you really look at it, you have a player that can change field position really quickly and when you couple that with the guys that we already have, Larry [Fitzgerald], Andre [Roberts] and Early [Doucet], we feel like it gives us a really good receiving core. There has been a lot of talk about us needing a number two and we have said all along that we felt like we have had some good young players and we have added another player to that mix who is physical, fast, big, can make some of those back shoulder catches and red zone plays. When you talk about needing a big play to change field position early, I think that puts pressure on a defense. In talking to our defense one of the things in this complete discussion about the positions that we are looking at, one of the things our defense said is that when you have a player like that it can create matchup problems and that’s really what you look for. We feel very good about the pick. We feel very good about the young man and we feel like we have a culture with our wide receivers about doing it the right way and being physical and making plays and certainly he can come in and adapt to that.”

  • On what WR Michael Floyd said in their meetings that left them at ease regarding him:

(RG): “We were very comfortable with the way that he handled himself and the discussions that we had with him. We had a sense that he had matured and obviously we just felt like through the due process that we went through not only with him, with the work we did on campus and the research that we did in other areas. We felt very comfortable with where he is right now.”

(KW): “As Michael Bidwill says, we vetted him out. We really put a lot of work into this besides just spending time with Michael and finding out his background. That involves our scouts spending a lot of time talking to people at the school and his background. I think one of the things that struck me about him was his honesty. We asked him some pretty tough questions about his past and he was very honest. I think that we emphasized the importance to him about some of our players and how important they are to the community and what type of role models they are and how important it was for us that he would have to fit that mold. I think it says a lot about him when last spring he could have come out in the supplemental draft but he chose to go back and play his senior year in a situation where he didn’t know the quarterback situation, what it was going to be like, and what it meant to him individually. But he felt an obligation to go back to the team and finish that year. Even though he wasn’t the captain, which he originally was, his leadership was important and that speaks a lot about him. I think that’s one of the things that was important for us to find out about him.”

  • On how much this is going to help WRs Larry Fitzgerald and Early Doucet:

(KW): “I think what we are going to be able to do with our tight ends and our receivers is going to be something that our coaches are excited about experimenting with this spring. It gives us another target, which we think will help take pressure off the quarterback. Obviously, we are excited about potentially taking more pressure off of Larry, which a lot of the defenses are scheming to try to do that. We felt good about our receivers as far as being able to make progress this spring and now we have added another weapon and a weapon that is very big, very fast, and very physical and I think that was important.”

    Wes Morgan

  • On if they talked to WR Larry Fitzgerald, who is known to have a relationship with Michael, at all about the pick:

(KW): “Well we hadn’t really talked to Larry much about that. I think it says a lot about Larry, that one of your best players is engaged, that he cares about what the team is doing, and that a receiver who wants the ball thrown to him every down is willing to bring in another guy that is obviously going to spread the receptions out. That says a lot. Larry is not as involved in the process as a lot of people like to think that he is, but certainly I think that Larry likes him, that Larry is going to take him under his wing, that is going to be important to Larry that this young man does well. I think that says a lot.”

  • On the decision making at that point and if there were teams wanting to move up:

(RG): “We did have calls throughout the morning in terms of moving up and when we were on the clock we received calls with offers to move back, but Michael Floyd was the highest rated player on that board at that time. We just didn’t feel like the offers that were made to us were of equivalent value or better. That certainly encouraged us to move forward with our feelings about the player.”

    Wes Morgan

  • On what goes through their mind envisioning WRs Michael Floyd and Larry Fitzgerald on the field at the same time:

(KW): “Hopefully we will be a little better offensively. We feel very good about our defense and the strides we made last season. Winning seven of our last nine games was important. I think that we did that as a team and we were starting to improve offensively and our defense, there is no question, we made great strides. If we add another weapon to our offense and we can improve that aspect of our game, coupled with the way our special teams played, with the way our defense played, then it makes us a very balanced football team. We hope to build off the momentum that we started over the last nine games last year.”

    Wes Morgan

  • On how important it is to get another wide receiver with that size:

(KW): “Well there is no question that was one of the things that was attractive to us. As you see highlights of this young man over the next couple of days, or even today, you can see some of those catches in the red zone, down the sideline. Those are the type of catches that you have to make in the NFL. How many catches have we seen Larry make like that over the years that were big catches? If you have another player that can make some catches like that, not taking anything away from Andre [Roberts] or Early [Doucet], I want to be clear about that, but it certainly adds to your team. Like I said, this is a big kid who is fast and who is physical and those are qualities that we value as an offense, especially when we are talking about some of our sub packages. If we get Ryan Williams back healthy and Beanie [Wells] and LaRod [Stevens-Howling], those guys have to block, because you do have to run the ball a little bit once in a while in this game. That is important.”

    Wes Morgan

  • On if WR Michael Floyd reminds them of former Cardinals WR Anquan Boldin:

(KW): “I don’t make comparisons like that. I don’t really like to compare players. Anquan is an outstanding football player in this league and Michael Floyd hasn’t done one thing in this league as a player. I think that we like the fact that, like I said, he’s a physical player. That’s something that you need at that position, to be able to come in our bunch sets and block the edge, to be able to come across in motion and block safeties, because there are some pretty big safeties in this league. That’s important. I’m excited to see where he can go. He’s got good players in front of him. He’s got to come in here and work hard to earn himself a spot as far as getting playing time, but I’m excited to have him in here competing.”

    Wes Morgan

  • On if it’s a lot of waiting now or are they going to try and move up:

(RG): “We are not going to sit idle. If there is an opportunity there we will certainly consider it. As it stands right now, we don’t have a second round pick so there is not a lot we can do but wait. But we will see what happens here between today and tomorrow.”

    Wes Morgan

  • On if the draft is deep enough in offensive linemen that they can get what they need:

(RG): “I think that there will be opportunities there. We certainly hope so. We are not going to do it at the expense of other magnificent players that in terms of what we feel they can post in the league. We’ll just have to see how it develops, but I think we will have an opportunity to get good football players and hopefully we will be able to address the offensive line.”

    Wes Morgan

  • On if WR Michael Floyd was just too good to pass up even with their need at offensive line:

(RG): “He was too good to pass up. I think that’s just a simple way of putting it. As Coach indicated, he gives us the opportunity to do a lot of things offensively. When you have that kind of opportunity for a player like that, you’re better off taking him.”

    Wes Morgan

  • On how much they liked Iowa T Riley Reiff:

(RG): “Well, he’s still on the board. Hopefully he’ll be there in the third when we pick. We liked Riley Reiff. There are a lot of excellent players on the board, but he’s certainly one that we have taken great interest in.”

    Wes Morgan

  • On when WR Michael Floyd become the number one player on their board:

(RG): “We’ve talked historically about our 120 board. We line those guys up, and as it began to fall, he was the guy. So there wasn’t a lot of discussion about it. We’d had a lot of in-depth discussion in this building about that 120 board and coming to the process of how we ranked them. It was really a fairly smooth process. I think the only thing that we were weighing as we got closer to that pick was whether or not we were going to accept any trades, or a trade, to move out of that spot. As it turned out, we just didn’t feel like there was value there beyond taking the selection.”

    Wes Morgan

  • On if they would have traded down if WR Michael Floyd had been off the board before their pick:

(RG): “I don’t know. Obviously, you have to weigh what is there versus the offers. We would have gone through the same process with the next player, whether or not it was more valuable to make the pick as opposed to moving out. It just depends on what the offers would have been at that point.

    Wes Morgan

  • On the importance of not only getting WR Michael Floyd but keeping him from being selected by the St. Louis Rams with the next pick:

(RG): “I have no idea what their plans were. We’re just happy with our selection. We’ll look forward to our next one.”
