Athlon Sports Picks Notre Dame No. 20 in 2012 Pre-Season Poll

  • Athlon Sports, publisher of the No. 1-selling college football magazine, has Notre Dame at No. 20 with two players being tabbed as preseason All-Americans.

“There are huge expectations for Brian Kelly’s program in his third season in South Bend,” says Athlon Sports Managing Editor Mitch Light. “The Fighting Irish defense should be a solid unit, and the key to Notre Dame navigating a tough schedule will be finding stability and production at quarterback.”

Two Notre Dame standouts were named preseason All-Americans, with tight end Tyler Eifert and linebacker Manti Te’o being voted to the first team. In addition, the Fighting Irish offensive line and linebackers units were ranked No. 9 in the country.

  • We hear that huge expectations line every year. It's time to live up to them and get it done on the field.

  • Why wouldn't you put the largest fanbase's team in the top 25??? You'll sell more magazines....

Sorry to be a Debbie Downer - but pre season polls are baseless

  • edd1066,

It shows how far this program has fallen when you consider a No. 20 ranking "huge expectations."

That used to be grounds for dismissal or evidence of failure.

No kidding. That's a great way to put it Lou.

I remember when we ND used to be mocked for always being preseason top 5, (believe we were #2 or #3, Quinn's last year) Now we are saying 20 is lofty. Sad, hopefully it's turning around and I believe it is.

I agree Lou, i didnt mean it as it was my great expectations, lol, but it does show how far we have fallen. Years ago the fanbase, me included, would have been screaming our displeasure with such a ranking. Now it would be considered a positive step, lol.
