Atkinson to WR

  • I think we are in good shape in the backfield with Wood and Riddick ready to get most of the touches. McDaniel and at least one of the two freshman can take the remaining snaps. Hopeful with Roberson. We need Atkinson to play in Floyd's spot. Defintely shown he can be a game breaker. I don't think we can count on the freshman. Its up to Atkinson, Daniels and Smith to updrade the receiver spot. Maybe Farley. One ot two need need to win a starting job. The Starting Jones, Goodman and Toma is the same as stating Rees at QB. Just not enough natural ability to make the offense dynamic. They can be competent 2nd or 3rd targets.

I like your thought on Atkinson to good of athlete to be sitting,WR he wouldn't have to much of a problem making the switch from RB.

  • Kelly made it very clear last year that Atkinson is definitely a RB. They gave him a look at WR and it just didn't work out. Frankly, I think people are overlooking his skills as a RB. Once he puts on some muscle and learns how to pick up the blitz, he could be the home run threat that Jonas provided last season. I'm excited to see him showcase his skills at the Spring Game.

  • I completely agree! You couldn't have made a better post! I just gave you a plus 1 on this one

  • He was recruited as a wide out. He played running back as a 'team player' to help out. He needs to be on the field and get touches. Any wideout position works. With Wood having demonstrable success and 2 years left, Riddick having TB ability and Toma just as effective at wideout, and McDaniel, Russell and Mahone available with Carlisle coming in '13 -'15, Yes, Atkinson should be a receiver and a returner. Just get him the ball!!

I don't know how much of a look they gave him. He was expected to play WR until Roberson went down and left us with very little depth. Now that we have 8 RB's on the roster I wouldn't mind seeing him at WR. I hope he gets the touches that everyone expected Riddick to have. If he's not contributing much at RB and the WR situation doesn't work itself out I hope he gets a look. I think Atkinson makes a huge contribution on OFF next year. Rather it be WR or RB I don't care.

  • Better one of three WRs, than number 3 back. Let's get the best players on the field.

  • Atkinson's speed needs to be on the field. Since the coaches see him every day in practice, hopefully they can put him in the position that benefits the team most.

And he really thought that Riddick was going to work out at WR.

I'm not saying that Atkinson would or would not work at reciever, but I really feel that we are going to be looking at a very different offense next season. An entire new staff on that side of the ball, and I think that Coach Martin is going to a lot more sympatico with BK as far as what he wants.

  • Pacificendo,

I could see Farley moving back to CB, especially because the running back/slot receiver positions will be coached as one. Riddick, Atkinson, Carlisle and incoming freshman Russell all fit that mold.

Plus, with Farley at CB, you would have three units to work with in the spring: Lo Wood and Bennett Jackson as juniors, Josh Atkinson and Jalen Brown as sophomores, and then Tee Shepard and Farley as the newcomers. Maybe Eilar Hardy could get moved there too if he recovers from his knee surgery, but I'd be less certain about that.

    How is Hardy's health?

As much as I too would love to see Atkinson at WR, Im afraid "we gave him a look, it didnt work" might mean that he simply cant catch. I hope not. But maybe he'll be used for quick hits, screens, reverses, speed sweeps from motion, drag routes and the like.

Im sure they'll use him somewhere.

  • As someone else said, Kelly said he was a RB because his "ball skills" aren't WR material.
