BCS Playoffs Update

  • Sporting News and CBS are both reporting from the commissioners' meeting in Hollywood, Fla. this week. Both said that it appears that the group has decided of a four-team playoff at this point going forward. The rest of the details have yet to be settled. Here's an update from Matt Hayes.

  • Its definitely a good start. I'm hoping we ultimately arrive at an 8-team playoff. But you gotta start somewhere.

  • Now they just have to decide how are they going to get at least two SEC teams in there every year.

  • I'm fine with this.

  • I have been talking about this for years

Have 1 play 3 in the orange
Have 2 play 4 in the rose
Have that winner play in the sugar
And 5-6 or whatever play in fiesta

And you can even rotate that every year so certain bowls dont get all grumpy

Big question like swarback (bad spelling)
Said .. This goes a long way to seeing if we are going to be independent or not ..

  • Why would the bowls be included in the playoffs? Play the semi final games on campus. That is your reward for being the top 2 teams in the country. You get a home game in the playoffs. For teams like ND and Wisconsin playing a SEC team in the north in December is a much different game than playing them in the perfect conditions in the Sugar Dome. This helps keep the regular season important and takes away part of the SEC's built in advantage when it comes to the BCS. Play the Final on neutral ground ala the super bowl.

The non playoff teams can still play in the bowls.

I like the thought of the first round of an 8-team playoff being played on Campus sites, however, if its only a four team playoff I feel it should be neutral fields throughout. Most years we do not really "know" who the top 2 teams in the country are. For example, five teams were undefeated heading into the bowls three years ago.

I agree that an 8 team playoff is much better. I would even argue for 16. Your right it would be difficult to pick the top 2 team when you have a 13-0, and three 12-1 teams. But what if there is 6 or 7 12-1 teams? There is never really a perfect solution.

I don't like the advantage that SEC and other warm weather teams have in the post season. I think if a BIG 10 team or Notre Dame is 13-0 and have to play a 10-2 LSU team in the semi's I think ND earned the home field advantage. "neutral game" at the Superdome. The elements also can become part of the game adding to the reward of a 13-0 regular season.

I actually laid out my dream scenario in a thread a while ago. I still have that dream. In the mean time this 4 team playoff is a great improvement.

  • 4 is a good number. Any more and you really change the entire sport at its most fundamental level, which is a regular season that means something.

  • The key question is will the Big East lose there automatic qualifier for the BCS? Eventually the playoff system will end up in court when somebody gets left out.
