Bielema's move to ar

  • Does anybody else see this as a lateral move at best? He is moving from a top tier big 10 to a mid tier $ec team. The only thing I can imagine made him make the move is throwing lots of cash at him! Any thoughts?

It's all about the Benjamin's on this one. It's a step back in terms of a football program. But probably a step towards about 2 million more a year.

  • Im with you. Its a head scratcher. Perenial rose bowl contender to middling sec team

  • What surprises me most is I think he will have a harder time recruiting the players he will need to compete in that conference. He doesn't really have a lot of connections down South. He is a Midwest guy so he will be hard pressed to bring in the types of players a Bama or Florida or even South Carolina bring in year after year. While games aren't won by recruiting classes only it certainly helps to have the depth and speed necessary to compete there.

  • Money and the luster of the SEC.. No other reason. He had a really good thing at Wisconsin. I hope he doesn't regret it, but I think he will. He was arguably the top coach in the Big Ten. Joining the SEC West, much less the SEC, he is going to have to battle to be top 3-4 with Saban, Miles, Sumlin, Malzahn, Mullen, and Freeze all there. Malzahn is a great mind. I can't say enough good things about Hugh Freeze. Sumlin made the transition to the SEC seamless. Etc.

I know money is important, but Bielema, money isn't everything. You just downgraded.

In my case, I hope he does regret it. I have never been able to stand the guy personally! I have a list of about 8 coaches I simply can't stand and he is definitely one of them.

  • Got tired of the Barry Alvarez shadow and it cant help the guy is still the AD... warmer climate, better facilities the same reason a recruit picks the SEC over Wisconsin and of course the cash.... He cant do any worse than Petrino did off the field.

    This.

Wisconsin finished behind Ohio State and, unbelievably, Penn State in the Leaders division in the Big Ten this year. That division will belong to Urban Meyer as long as he wants it to. Bielema may as well take a pay raise to play for runner-up every year.

I just can't believe a guy who got fired up by Urban Meyer's recruiting tactics is going to the SEC, which Urban Meyer left in part because even HE questioned some of the generally tolerated recruiting practices in the conference.

  • So what does Corey Clement do now? Will he stick with the Badgers go back to PItt?

Did he really get fired up by Urban's recruiting tactics or was he trying to get Meyer to back off. I don't see anything wrong with what Meyer did. Meyer isn't recruiting anyone who doesn't want to be recruited by Meyer.

it allows Bielema to build his own program instead of keep on what Barry started.

He also expands his recruiting network. I bet BB wants the Iowa job in the future.

It is very much about the money and the ego here boys.

Wisconsin is a great program, but the whole SEC thing is what appeals to his ego. As does lots and lots of money.
