It really sucks what happened to in my opinion the best basketball conference there was. Even before ND joined it the Big East was always my favorite basketball conference. Its a sad day as far as basketball goes, just my opinion.

I couldn't agree more. It also sucks that ND is not with the other catholic schools. I don't like it.

He said recently that every day that goes by without knowing exactly where ND sports will land next season makes the whole situation harder (scheduling, etc.). He hopes to know something before Notre Dame leaves for the Big East Championship.

If it were simply a basketball decision, Brey made it very clear that he would have liked to stay in the Big East. When it was revealed that the Catholic schools were breaking away, he also sounded as if he would rather go with them than to the ACC. But this is a football-driven decision.

The stability of Big East, ACC, Big Ten, etc is wobbly at best as programs are looking for security. Notre Dame and Swarbrick know what they are doing, but the landscape changes in a heartbeat as money dictates much of conference alignment.

For football the basketball only conf would have worked better. ND could forever and always be independent and no one would ask "why is ND not in a conference". I think the catholic 7 was just bad timing.

Notre Dame needed to join the ACC for bowl access. The basketball-only conference would not have provided that.
