Bobby Petrino Put on Leave ... Will He Be Kept?

  • Arkansas head coach Bobby Petrino was put on paid administrative leave on Thursday night after his AD, Jeff Long, learned Petrino had failed to disclose he had been riding with a 25-year-old female employee and former All-SEC volleyball player on his motorcycle that skidded off the road over the weekend, resulting in some visible injuries to Petrino. Petrino said he had been concerned about protecting his family and keeping an "inappropriate relationship from becoming public."

"I will fully cooperate with the university throughout this process and my hope is to repair my relationships with my family, my athletic director, the Razorback Nation and remain the head coach of the Razorbacks," he said in a statement issued by the university.

Because Petrino led Arkansas to the BCS in 2010, a No. 5 finish in 2011 and has a potential top-10 outfit again this year, I believe this will be like the Rick Pitino infidelity scandal at Louisville a couple of years ago. He'll be considered a too good coach to let go. What say you?

  • I think he should have consulted with Kiffen on how to keep such matters under wraps. Of course, Lane might have also admonished him for wasting his time on an "older" women.

Okay, seriously, I agree with you, Lou. The scales of justice (or outrage) tip in the favor of a coach with a .750+ winning percentage in situations like this, where there has been no death or dismemberment. He skates, unless the woman is the governor's daughter.

  • I agree Lou...the Pitino blueprint will be Arkansas' game plan.

  • This is a prime example where winning out weighs ethics

  • Unfortunately, I am already reading articles online saying "if Brian Kelly can send a kid to his death and not lose his job, Petrino deserves to keep his job too." I would be surprised if he was let go because he is highly successful at Arkansas and because Arkansas has been down this road before when Houston Nutt had an improper relationship with a Fayetteville anchorwoman and was not canned until a couple of year afterwards.

My luck w/the Irish 18-6...GO IRISH!!!

  • Lou,

    Agree 100%
Things are different today. Arkansas hadnt been any good in so long before getting Petrino. They have to just let it go...

Very good coach who likes younger women...lol
His bigger problem is what he did to his family.

These decisions seem to be weighed like admissions to college using your GPA and SAT. If the GPA wasnt so hot but the SAT was scorching, you're in. Or vice versa.

Same with this. If the transgression was perilous but the record of the team is highly successful, you pass GO. Had this girl sustained serious injury, for example, it may have tipped the scales and we might be looking at something different.

Seems to be all about results today, not the path or process. :(

  • Man down, let kicking ensue:

Former Atlanta Falcon Lawyer Milloy told the New York Times on Friday that Petrino's situation is "karma."

"Just because he knows Xs and Os, that doesn't mean he's a nice person," Milloy said.

  • Arkansas knew Petrino's was less than a stand up guy when they hired him. Hard to believe this is anything other than a PR move by the Ark. administration now acting outraged by Petrino's lack of character. They hired him to win. If they wanted a leader of young men they would have never even had him on a long list of candidates. Arkansas got one thing right. They are in the SEC where they belong. The question is when is Vanderbilt going to wake up and divorce themselves from that filth?

  • If he is fired, he has an instant job at Kentucky where ethics is a four letter word.

    topgome

  • He stays. But man how would you like to go home to your wife after that. He'll probably look worse than what he already does after she gets done with him

    daconner

  • Tough to imagine a school keeping him, but if anyone will it's an SEC school..

  • if it was just the affair, I'd say he should keep his job. But he hired her and was having some sort of "inappropriate" relationship with her he should be fired. He was using university money to continue an affair. If this was a lot of schools he would have had his office cleaned out already.

  • I believe that Petrino will be let go. I think The University of Arkansas has more to worry about since Jessica Dorrel was an employee and a sexual harrassment case is far more damning than the head coach's infidelity. If I'm U of A, I send Petrino packing, settle out with JD and hire Gus Malzon.

    Case Closed.

Great point...just like Clinton...what he did many times is between him and his God (and wife) but Monica was an intern, just like a teacher/student, doctor/patient, priest/member of the congregation....totally unacceptable. Anyone who uses his position/status to do what he did is unacceptable.

  • For those interested, the Arkansas State Police officer who took Petrino to the hospital after his crash released a statement that detailed the events of the few days surrounding the crash. He also happens to be the same officer that works security detail for Petrino during gamedays.

  • All I know is Petrino would have rather had lit cigarettes put out on his eyelids than do that press conference. Imagine having to talk about an affair with a younger woman, who happens to be your employee, while wearing a neck brace and looking like your face had just gone through a bail of razor wire.

    Wes Morgan

  • It's official, multiple sources report Petrino will not return as Arkansas' coach next season. Major implications for the way the whole SEC shakes out next year.
