Brian Kelly Knows...

  • I just re-watched the game...We still lost and it was brutal.....One thing that is going off like a gong in my head is the pre-game interview. The sorta-hot Alex Flanagan asked Brian Kelly about how far away we were from being a great team. Brian Kelly responed, with something like "big picture we are a LONG way off from where we need to be. In the short-term we are gonna make some nice runs, but we are a long way off.

He knows whats up. He has a plan.

Losing sucks. We will fight again next week, and continue to fight and get better. I'm really down, but far from out and I know this team will be the same way. We have a long way to go, but our heart is huge.

One last thing....ND stadium. PLEASE STOP PLAYING "Crazy Train". Just stop.....thank you.

I will spend tomorrow brooding and sulking. Then Monday it will be onto BEAT NAVY!!

  • Great perspective, Paddy. POTW material right there. Needed that.

  • Paddy, a special thanks from me as well, Mate. I haven't had much sleep and can't get this freakin' loss outta my system. Been using more than my usual quota of posts as some kind of therapy to get over it.

We can't be fair-weather fans. And we can't give up. Let's hope that the end of our pain is near...

Go Irish! Beat Navy!! Thanks Paddy!!!

  • Amen, Paddy!! Very intuitive to pick up his comment heard him say it but did not put two and two together until now. He does get, he knows we are a few steps away.

I haven't always thought that, but I absolutely did last night. She was ready for prime time.

Unfortunately, Notre Dame wasn't. Great pick-up, Paddy, on Kelly's words. They were painfully prophetic. While the rest of us are so achingly ready to believe this team has arrived, he knows they haven't. After all these years, the last thing we want to hear is that we have to be patient, but we have no choice. This team just isn't there yet.

  • Exactly right, Paddy. No one in the program has said, "We've got this all together. We're exactly where we want to be." It's the media and the fans that are trying to force it there. I think the opinions are grounded in the talent we see out there and the flashes of brilliance that this team shows when they've got it together, but the truth is that there are still holes and these guys are still capable of making mistakes. Other programs seem to "rebuild faster" than we seem to be capable of doing. But I'd argue that we have been trying to rebuild through 4 different coaching staffs spanning over a decade, and it's hard to undo that over night. These guys know they aren't there yet.

Also a good point about the Crazy Train. At first I was like, "oh hey, cool, there's music in the stadium." And then after the 4th or 5th time in a row, it kind of lost its luster. At least change it up some. I do have a point for discussion... this isn't a criticism or any kind of attempt to stay mired in tradition, but I'm wondering if anyone else thinks that maybe the hype last night and the changes put into improving the crowd were somehow hurtful to the overall experience of the game. Is ND trying to be something it isn't? I'm not saying it (towels, music, night game, etc) was all necessarily a bad idea, but I'm just not sure we have a crowd that has bought into that yet either. Maybe it's more than just the team that has to evolve from years of mediocrity?

  • That's it, Kelly's already making excuses. He can keep the reality to himself, and start coaching, but to label us that way in public is a defeatist or apologist attitude I just can't abide. That dog won't hunt, just ask Willingham.

Sure it may be true, but Kelly should be busy fixing it, not apologizing for it.

TV doesn't do her justice. I was 10 feet away from her Saturday night and she was stunning.

We wouldn't be such a long way off if he would've run Hendrix again from the one and not put Lo Wood up against their best WR instead of our two seniors.

  • The problem is that he's sending mixed messages.

It's all well and good that he acknowledges this before the game. Yet, at other times he says nothing short of a BCS bid or NCS is acceptable. No matter if he means this year or going forward, why bother saying these things if he, indeed, knows they're so far away?

All he does is build false hope that keeps blowing up in his face repeatedly in situations such as last night.

Just knock off the hyperbole and just focus then on building the program, and talk accordingly.

Just like Weis, his mouth is his own worst enemy.

Where was the apology? Where were the excuses? You don't like his being candid, but if he was pushing kool-aid, you'd be on his case for being disingenuous. Well, if you weren't, I would be. I'll take a dose of reality any day.

  • I give it about 2 more years and the grumpy alum will run Kelly off. They probably don't like some of the changes he's done so any misstep the program takes will have them pouring lighter fluid on his toes. Very sad......but expected.

Sooner or later we'll have to pull Touchdown Jesus off the library and have him coach a few games.

  • I'll take a dose of consistency and a side order of staying in games against supposedly lesser programs and poorer coaches. I can really tolerate loses, I really can. I can't abide mediocre performances.

If He didn't have them at 20-6 after two years, He'd be just an ex-carpenter who talked a good game.

But, if He did go 20-6, they'd give Him a ten year extension.

The Crazy Train got to be too much....they also played it too long after SC broke the huddle. We do not need gimmicks to raise the volume. Getting back to winning and playing sound fundamental football will raise the volume more than these gimmicks. I was at the last night game in '90 and the stadium was much louder then than it was last night even with 25 thousand less people. Also, BK may have a plan, and I support him. However, he made some head scratching calls, the coaching staff seemed to be out schemed up front, and he puts the loss on his players. As a coach, he needs to take it on the chin, and he can call out his players in private.

  • Sorry, but I"m not buying his excuses. There is way too much talent on this team for them not to be more successful. Maybe Kelly doesn't have the right kind of players for HIS scheme, but as a coach, he has to find a scheme to fit these players to make them successful. I wouldn't exactly say the ND team is "rebuilding." They have ALOT of talent on this team at all position, PLUS depth!
A good coach will ALWAYS have their players ready to perform - especially after two weeks of preparation. It took 1/2 way through the 1st quarter before we started to warm up. There were alot of bad coaching decisons going on, so maybe the coaches have a long way to go as well.
