Brian Kelly Ranked 9th Best Coach By Athlon Sports

  • Although I usually avoid or take with a grain of salt the extremely fickle "Best Coaches" rankings in college football, I was a little surprised to see Athlon Sports had Brian Kelly at No. 9 after consecutive 8-5 seasons. Usually, 10 losses over two years won't get you that high.

It's top 10 was 1. Nick Saban (Alabama), 2. Urban Meyer (Ohio State), 3. Bob Stoops (Oklahoma), 4. Frank Beamer (Virginia Tech), 5. Chris Petersen (Boise State), 6. Chip Kelly (Oregon), 7. Gary Patterson (TCU), 8. Steve Spurrier (South Carolina), 9. Brian Kelly (Notre Dame) and 10. Lane Kiffin (USC).

A for example of the fickle nature is a year ago Kiffin wouldn't have even been in the top 25. One good season or one bad season makes these rankings change with the wind. Texas' Mack Brown was all the way down to 14th after two bad seasons. I bet two years earlier he would have been in the top 5.

Les Miles was 20th. Had LSU beaten Alabama for the national title, I bet he'd be in the top 5 now.

Brady Hoke was 11 and Mark Dantonio 12.

  • Curious about the criteria. On another thread, Lou, you talked about Florida teams not having anyone drafted until the third round this year. Those are Meyer's recruits. I wonder if he'd be ranked #2 if he didn't have "health" issues and "family concerns" which prompted his departure from Florida. Maybe part of the ranking criteria is knowing when to get out of Dodge. Spurrier had as good a record as Urban did at Florida. Did he get dumber when he went to South Carolina and Urban is smarter now that he's in Columbus? Rankings like this are good for bar talk and message boards, but not much else, which means it was a good idea to throw it up here. Plenty of fodder for conversation and opinion.

  • Ham,

Back in the Summer of 1985, when I officially started at BGI, there was a huge survey done by a major national paper (I still have the article somewhere in my files) on the top college coaches in America. Nos. 1 and 2 were Don James (Washington) and George Welsh (Virginia), with LaVell Edwards (BYU) up there.

Bo Schembechler of Michigan was something like 20th and Lou Holtz of Minnesota was, if memory serves correct, something like 34th.

The previous season (1984), James' Washington team finished 11-1 and upset Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl. Welsh was 8-2-2 and took Virginia to its first ever bowl victory. BYU won the national title.

Meanwhile, Schembechler was 6-6 and coming off the Holiday Bowl loss to BYU that won the Cougars the national title. Holtz had been fired at Arkansas in 1983 and was 4-7 in his first year at Minnesota (after the Golden Gophers had been 1-10 the previous year, I might add).

Four years later, in the Summer of 1989, Don Heinreich's did a same "elaborate" survey. Lo and behold, this time Holtz was No. 1 after winning the national title and Schembechler was No. 2 after winning the Rose Bowl. Isn't it amazing how much a "better" coach they were?

That's why I always review such lists like these with bemusement.

  • I agree with maybe half of that Top 10. Saban is #1 hands down

  • I've said all along that I think BK is a top 10 coach. And that I would only vote Saban, Meyer, Petersen, Patterson, Chip Kelly, and Stoops ahead of him. So guess I had him at seven. Now wait till he starts winning BIG at ND... he will rise to the top

Agree. The nature of the media is to focus on the short-term--who is "hot"
now, who is "cold" now, with "now" usually being a period of not more than
12 to 15 months. Hard really to blame them.

Rarely does the media bring a longer-term prism to discussions such as
these. Further, once the media settle on one, two or three "favorites",
anything that detracts from their "story-line" is ignored. Right now, Saban
and Meyer are glorified and the oversigning and 37 criminal arrests
issues are swept under the rug. In fact, the story-line in recruiting circles
is "who hasn't Alabama offered" as opposed to the reverse.

  • BK is one of the better coaches in the country i think that he is a better coach than frank beamer and Bob Stoops hes a great coach but he struggles in the big game im happy with who we got!

  • IMO brian kelly does not deserve to be in the top 10 no matter what

    criteria you use.

Well, how Brady Hoke didnt crack the top 10 is almost as bad as Miles not being there. But also, some serious votes that were lacking were for Bilemna up in not-so-sexy Madison, Wisconsin and in Fayetteville for Bobby Petrino.

I would though like to see the results of the vote in another year, especially regards to where BK and ND stand. And yes Ham, although Meyer did a sensational job for 4 years in Gainesville, apparently knowing when to jump ship must clearly be a criteria.
