Brian Kelly on ESPN - QBs, 2012 schedule, Nix & Floyd

  • Brian Kelly was interviewed live on campus by ESPN Sports Center's Mobile Studio:

    On quarterbacks...

"We've given them all an opportunity to run with the first group, so I think any way that we can create situations for them to grow in their game is going to be important. The spring game is very important for us in the way that we have it set up for our four quarterbacks. Some games you're just trying to get through, but this one we need to evaluate our quarterbacks."

  • On the biggest factor in choosing one of the four quarterbacks...

"I think it starts with the ability to take care of the football. We had turnovers last year that cost us two or three games and we cannot continue to go down that road. With our defense emerging and playing better football and getting closer to a championship level - the quarterback position now has to take better care of the football. The guy that does that puts himself in a good position to succeed."

  • On 2012 schedule...

"I knew what I was getting into (when I took this job) and our players do too. When they signed with the University of Notre Dame they know that they're going to have to play one of the toughest, if not the toughest, schedule in the country. Not being in a conference we don't have the conference affiliation, we have to have that type of schedule to make sure that when we have the kind of football team that can win those games that we're going to play for a National Championship.

"Putting that schedule together every year is going to be difficult, this one just happens to be probably one of the most difficult."

  • On Louis Nix III and Twittergate...

"Just being a college student. The ups and downs of going to class in a very challenging environment at Notre Dame and being away from home. With social media now things are out there and so transparent that every little blip on the radar is magnified. But not a real big deal. Louis is fine and we enjoy having him around and his personality. But I think every day our guys learn a lot more about social media."

  • On Michael Floyd and the NFL Draft:

"He's an immediate impact player because of the way he trains, his commitment to the game and his love to the game. He's a guy that in the locker room you're going to be able to trust he brings all those intangibles. When you put the ball in his hands, whether it's a short throw or a long throw, he makes things happen. I think he's an impact player. He's the best player I've ever coached."

  • Kelly's comments on Floyd when he was heading into his first season was that he needed to become a better player ... quite a difference in how he feels about him today being the "best player" he's every coached.

  • Thanks JSapp. I left the room for 2 min, and missed half the interview. Seems like he was kinda sweet on Sage Steel (don't blame him) cuz he said he dressed up for her since she's and IU grad.

  • Kelly to ESPN's Joe Schad via Twitter:

"I feel really good because for the first time I can say, 'This is my team.'"

    Dan Murphy

  • More from Schad's interview: Kelly said he plans on being more involved with the QBs this year and going forward because his message was being "muted" last season.

Charley Molnar, you are now under the bus.

My luck w/the Irish 18-6...GO IRISH!!!

  • True though.. Whether he's under the bus or not. We recruited different types of players once Charlie left. It was for the best for everyone.

Charley has only been gone 4 months, which players are you talking about?

All players that committed to ND, went through multiple coaching changes, stayed with the program, worked hard every day, did everything asked of them....you are now under the bus (again).

Yeah, I'm not sure why BK keeps making those polarizing kinds of statements. They are nothing but devisive. Why or how can he say "for the first time this is my team"? He didn't recruit or sign any of the 4 or 5th year players on the roster. Makes zero sense.

  • I took it as he is saying they are all buying in and have done everything he has asked. Also he has the coaching staff he wants and feels most comfortable with.

To me he is giving a compliment, not an insult

I'll bet Dayne wished BK's message was "muted" during the first andonly half that he played. LOL.

But Charlie Molnar -- not a ringing endorsement.
Charlie was not BK's QB/OC coach at Cinn, Quinn was, but Quinn moved on, and Charlie got a big promotion.
Guess BK is much happier with Martin in that position.
