A look at some facts and figures, the turning point and Brian Kelly’s perspective in Florida State’s 18-14 Champs Sports Bowl victory over Notre Dame.

  • Thanks Lou.

Same story. Same outcome. Same BS from BK.

    SDWolverine

  • I don't think it is BS from BK. He nailed it right on the money. We have to get our offense and especially our QB's to play at a higher level and not make silly throws. Hitting defenders right in the chest and throwing into double coverage to the back-up playing for Floyd is down right high school level leadership. We need to focus on stopping the turnovers and I am glad Coach Kelly said it so plainly for all to hear.

    IrishWV

  • Then on their 10th possession while trailing 14-3, the Seminoles faced third-and-5 at their 21. Quarterback E.J. Manuel lofted a deep pass to freshman Rashad Greene that appeared to be overthrown — but Greene made an out-stretched, diving catch at the Notre Dame 46.

-I too thought that was a key play. No surprise FSU picked on Gary Gray on this play as well their deep ball in the 4Q as well.

My luck w/the Irish 18-6...GO IRISH!!!

Bingo! The difference last night was at the QB position. They had the better one who didn't make mistakes and they won by 4.

I will add since this is a "By The Numbers" article, that this biggest number is the points we didn't score in the first half when given the chance. Our lead at the half should have been 17-0, similar to last year's Sun Bowl halftime score. If it is, FSU might've started looking toward next year like Miami did.

My luck w/the Irish 18-6...GO IRISH!!!

  • No mention though, of the coaching staff once again playing conservatively on both sides of the ballwith a lead. At least take responsibility when you manage the game like a sally.

I did not elaborate, maybe too depressed, but it was the same outcome. That is why I typed "same BS."

They cannot hold a lead. Go look at FSU's offensive rankings for the regular season. ND should have been able to hold that lead.

I do give credit to FSU's WRs corps. Those were some great catches.

Next year I will check in on you and see if you are still such an apologist. I do not mean to attack you personally, I am just done with the crowd that always defends the coaching staff.

Sure, they do not actually play the game but they are in charge and they are paid big money for results other than what we have seen over the past few years (and staffs).

Not sure I can lay the blame on BK for the loss when the QB throws 2 INTs into the end zone and we miss a FG. The coaches aren't turning the ball over. The game plan was solid, we just have to hope Golson can execute better at the position in 2012. If not, we are royally SCREWED.

Our safeties must get better at coverage help over the top. They were late all year in deep ball coverage.

My luck w/the Irish 18-6...GO IRISH!!!

We needed an offense that could score 7 points in the second half and they couldn't do it...7 points in a half is that too much to ask? Of course not, had we scored 7 points in the second half we win the game.

Brian Kelly made a mistake at the end of the season where he started, he never grasped the QB position. That is 100% on him and he knows it, it will be fixed next year believe it.

No down-vote please - thank you! No down-vote por favor, gracias ! Gringo Mafia ~ amigo el número cuatro

  • Lou... we need by the numbers that explains the whole season:

How many times was Gray part of a key play that went bad for ND?
How many times did Rees screw up in the Red Zone?
How many times in the fourth quarter did the defense implode?
How many times did we (just fans) realize that BK screwed up with bad`decisions or lack of during the year..include annnouncers that questioned that ND was doing?
How many times were there stupid penalities that changed momentum or gave points to the other team?
How many times did BK give BS answers?
How many times recruiting mistakes? Yet to be determined!
How many time does Wood go sideways instead of forward and gets nothing?
How many times has a team completely decide not to run back punts?
How many times has the secondary been burned on third down?

    BORGHI

  • Face it BK you got out coached. Of course you would never say that. Didn't you call the game. Gee I can't wait for next year.

    daconner

  • I heard Rod Gilmore say the other day that both FSU and Notre Dame were Top 10 teams entering next year....but same old story, we outplay a team for 3 quarters and in the 4th we just let it slip away. What evidence do we have that they won't be 8-4 or 7-5 again next year....none.

    travisbarke

  • All year this team had the penchant to do the worst things at the worst times.

    * Nice 14-0 lead - give up a 70+ kick off return.
    * Jump offside on a 47 yard FG attempt, so the 42 yarder is good.
    * Drive down the field easily when 14-3 for killing TD, run the ball meekly up the middle on 1 and 2nd and 10; killing the drive and momentum.
    * Give up repeated long passes, with our DBs never even looking for the ball.
    * Get great field position in waning minutes, first down on the 15. Holding penalty and then - on First flipping down - force one into double coverage.

Sad thing was - was not that excited on last drive - all I was thinking was "how will we blow it this time". Which is what we have been pre-conditioned to think.

QB is a big, big problem - but our ability to excecute when the game is on the line is a team wide issue.

If Golson is the answer, then ND is in real trouble. Nothing is known of the kid.

One of the reasons I am not as alarmed by the graduation of most of our secondary (including above all, Gary Gray) is that I believe we can't get any worse. Of course, I still cannot understand why Gary in five years never learned that as a defender, you can't turn your back on the ball---if you do, you can't make a play or you will be called for interference. On a side note, however, when Gray was recruited, he was rated as one of the best prep cornerbacks in the country by the rating services.

  • Here is a number.

3 - the number of rushers in the 3rd Q and first half of 4th Q.

Why? Why go to a prevent defense when the pressure defense was working so well. Their QB was scrapping himself off the turf. Then we give him time to throw, or room to scramble, and ... 14-3 becomes 14-18. Wow, it was like magic. Everyone was wondering what hit us.

Another question. On the second touchdown play, why was Dan Fox covering the receiver that scored the TD. Why were the CB's and Safeties too busy to help out.

    Arghhhh!!!

  • Just total feeling of disgust again. Missed chances, to's, etc. Same old, same old.

  • Oh, one more "by-the-number:

    0

    zero

    Zip

    nada

The number of ND QB's ready for a starting role. Two years and no one ready to run the BK spread offense. We are in big trouble.

  • If we get good DB play next year the offense won't need to do a ton to win. If we can limit TOs on offense next year, get ok play from the young DBs, and run the ball, this team will be pretty good. Considering the DBs couldn't have been any worse in coverage this year, I'm not worried about playing freshman in the secondary.

Golson and Hendrix should be ready to run the show next year. Its Hendrix' third year and Golson's 2nd and a half. This will both QBs 3rd spring. How much time could Kelly's system take to learn?!!
