CB Ronald Darby (Updated with direct quote)

  • Four-star cornerback Ronald Darby has always planned on taking other official visits since he committed to Notre Dame during the Blue-Gold Game weekend, and Maryland was the first school to receive a stop.

Auburn was another place he took a trip and he informed BlueandGold.com that Clemson was next. While he was torn between some other schools for his remaining trips, the contact period stirred up the process even more for him.

He's always kept things close to the vest, but word from our Florida State site following the Under Armour Game suggested that the Florida State coaches were able to successfully get into his ear and urge a visit.

We reported as such, and Corey Dowlar followed up with the most recent info on the Seminoles end today:

"Confirmed with a great source that Ronald Darby wants to visit Florida State for the January 13 weekend.

However, it is not a done deal. There are logistics that need to be worked out and his parents need to sign off on it first."

Florida and USC are just a pair of other schools that had been mentioned by the touted defensive back commit.

We're looking to confirm whether he has officially decommitted from Notre Dame, but we have heard from a number of sources that it was getting close to that point. Not that there isn't a chance that he'd get back to the Irish if that's what he felt was the best fit, but in rare cases do you find a kid commit, decommit and recommit to a program (Aaron Lynch and Stephon Tuitt being the exceptions, but knowing that Florida State and Georgia Tech were the competition).

We've seen the staff do it before and it will take great effort to do it again with Darby.

We'll post any more information we can receive, but trying to get something from Darby directly ... again, he's been rather quiet throughout.

    Update at 8:50 p.m.

Darby got back to me on his decision.

"I did (decommit from Notre Dame)," he said via text.

  • Not good, secondary and team speed are the biggest need and ND just lost the best of both.

Has he listed his reasons for the decommitment yet?

  • I would bet that the coaches told him that he needs to make a decision...if he waits and decommits a week before NSD, we wouldnt have time tio make certain backup plans. This just tells me that we have Yuri wrapped up and possibly another we are getting ready to go after.

  • Still a lot of secondary left committed though. Tee, Yuri (soon), Shumate, Turner, Prosise, and Baratti are no slouches. Coach will go at Darby 100% and if he's supposed to be Irish he will be. Like I said, no point in sweating it at this point.

That's not a bad point either. Three weeks gives us time to chase Poole and Manning if Darby is in fact gone for good.

  • Someone please give me a reason to not harm myself.

Seriously this sucks, but I will state as fact he was our third most important recruit behind Shepard and Greenberry. Secondly, the difference between Darby and no Darby should not be 8-4 and 11-1. One player is not going to solve our problems, although he could offer nice support. Hopefully we can sway him back, but no point in getting Darby if he is not going to be happy at Notre Dame.

  • Anybody that is reacting strongly in here.... you must be a first timer. This happens every year. Somebody always jumps ship, somebody always jumps on board surprisingly.... it's how it works man.

    Fuzz

  • Just like Omar Hunter... Only ND kid at UA allstar game, everyone gets in his ear and no ND support there to keep him straight.... I'm beginning to hate the UA game....

    ndboz

  • Jason, can you find out if ND is still in it? It is being reported elsewhere that ND is completely out. Just want to get it right.

    Payday

  • Coach Kelly needs to stay the hell away from Mr. Darby. Let's go get Yuri Wright and forget this guy once and for all. We need fox hole guys at ND.crackwhip

I agree that is a possibility. I was wondering if the coaches asked how serious he was since Wright is a solid possibility and we are getting close to a full recruiting class.

  • Coaches need to call Armond Armstead and let him know his schollie is now available with Mr. Darby's departure. The Armstead brothers would be a very digestable consolation prize. I can be a dynamic CB with that defensive line.

We all know it happens, so we have to like it? Darby was a top notch player and would been a welcomed addition, so the fact that he isn't coming sucks.
