Can Kiel Play Right Away?

Early enrollee Gunner Kiel will face stiff competition at the quarterback position, but that's nothing new to him.

  • If TR starts this year.....I think AH and EG would most likely transfer....why? Why sit another year and have a guy like gunner and most likely they will be looking at another QB next year's recruiting class.

I would start EG and lock him in for at least this year. TR is not going anywhere...he has two years in and two to go on a free education from ND. AH and gunner can battle for next man in and worst case....gunner can rs.

I do think if BK plays it wrong....we could be in big trouble.....

  • I still don't understand bk singning kiel. His style of play, calls for an option qb
This is going to be a mess all through the spring. nd will loose two qbs by the end of the year

  • TR absolutely can not be the starting quarterback this season,we need to have one of the other 3 QB's take over.I'm sick of hearing they're not ready, thats BS.Rees will not get us to a BCS game, which needs to be the goal this year, its long over due plus it will definitely help recruiting!!!!

  • My hope -- not my prediction -- is that Hendrix wins the starting job, Golson is the backup and situational guy; Rees, the emergency backup; and Kiel sits out a year and learns. If Hendrix falters or gets hurt, Golson steps up.

The more each of these guys gets to play, the less chance of someone walking off in a huff without our seeing what he could do. At the same time, if someone truly emerges as the dominant QB, then it will at least be understandable if one or two (God forbid) of the others transfers.

Unless he is lights out and clearly superior, I would rather Kiel didn't play right away, so that he will still be around at least 3 years from now.

Some coaches manage the starting QB progression brilliantly -- SC, in the last decade, did it phenomenally. They not only got the best guys, but stood them in line and played them only when their turn came. Kelly needs to get that kind of conga line going.

  • Rees can NOT start in 2012!! If the other two aren't "ready" yet BK's system is too difficult for college football. You can't have a system that takes QBs over 2 years to learn in college. If he says they aren't quite ready, I will puke.

Kiel, Golson or Hendrix cannot play right away. Rees is the starter for the the near future. Will any of the novice QB's see playing time, probably... Kelly will not gamble his job security on any of the 3 novices as starters, unless Rees goes down with injury..And a novel concept no one the "experts" on this board is considering is Rees could show marked improvement during the off season! He was thrown into the whole starting QB thing as a true freshman and has all the starting QB experience as it stands now. And if Kelly started one of the novices, the first play something went south you would see coming in as QB (you guessed it) Tommy Rees

to quote myself " Kelly will not gamble his job security on any of the three novices as starters" About says it all right there..... With Rees he has an 8-4 regular season. Job Secure!

  • He can... But I am guessing that he sure as heLL better not be. Hendrix or EG, but that is without any spring football. Let's see what happens then.

In sorry but I disagree with this. Rees could work another four years but will never have the arm strength or mobility that he seriously lacks. Rees played worse as the season went along. It's now good when a young QB regresses the way Rees did.

  • Golson... with some two headedness from Hendrix is my guess. Gunner shining shoes and carrying bags for a year.

EG will have two games to freshen up and rely a bit on the D and get some wind at his back. If he LIKES the pressure or even is unphased by it, he'll do just fine. We'll have a better idea in a few months. Not a worthy debate for today

  • The only certainty in this entire quarterback situation is that it will keep ND message boards alive between spring practice and next August.

I like that coach, almost like a Leak/Tebow combo.

Mmmmm.. I almost am wondering if you are bustin my chops a bit with that reference. I say that because I have probably written that vey idea for a combo(Leak/Tebow) like 4 or 5 times in different places... with more elaboration especially in short yardage and 'blue zone'

great minds think alike huh Vin? lol

Haha, I was serious coach. Haven't seen any of your references to that but I like it.

i see the only option for rees would be to transfer, and i could not blame him for trying to get somewhere for more pt. but it should be the most competetive field for kiel, hendrix and golson at qb that we've seen in a long time. any of the three could wind up starting, maybe even two playing. let's hope bk makes the best of this, instead of screwing it up.......

Run the ball. Stop the run. You win, or lose, up front.

Gunner is a 4.6 40 QB.. That's no joke.. just because he doesn't fit the 'option QB' or zone-read QB description, which I just think means that he's fast and can't throw, doesn't mean he isn't a perfect fit for Notre Dame's offense under BK because he is.. He will play sooner rather than later. It may not be in Dublin, but he will be a starter before the end of the year.

NDGuy calling his shot. Like it. My perfect world is the EG/AH combo while Gunner wears a red shirt.

Moving forward, it'll be Golson vs. Gunner—may the best QB win.

My luck with the Irish: 2-4, 3-time POTW
