Charlie Weis

  • I recently had a chance to talk to someone who worked in the ND football office while she was a student. She went out of her way to say what a pleasure it was to work for Charlie Weis, that the atmosphere in the office was very welcoming and team oriented, and that he was simply a very good person. I think he is one of many people who's public persona is different from the true person. She was so positive about him, I wanted to pass it along.

  • I don't think that there are any ND fans who hate Weis (maybe I'm wrong). He just doesn't fit at the college level. He showed that at Notre Dame. He's showing that at Florida. He helped the Patriots and the Chiefs. And Burger King. It's ok, I'm allowed one dig per day.

  • Weis,

Think he will always be remembered for flashing the metal but not winning it.
Snot pouring out his nose on the sideline.
Short fat guy getting blasted by his own player on the sideline.
    Good at recruiting offensive talent.
    Very poor defense.

I liked Charlie he seemed harmless and cared for this players but brought the wrong mentality to ND (As you see were still trying to get rid of it).
Was relieved to see him go. (Good luck Gators)

  • Charlie is a good man .It is no knock to say he was not a good head coach. His teams were not tough, and he did not develop players well. His good friend Bill Parcells would never recommend him when teams were looking for a head coach..He tried to come on strong and turned college football against him .He did his best ,he did not have the s.o.b.part of him that most great coaches have.

    Key Word* "liked"

He showed his true colors when he was let go. Instead of bowing out gracefully and understood that he wasn't getting the job done his ego kicked in and he cursed us and talked smack.....

  • I met CW mulitple times and he was always more kind and gracious to me and my family then he had to be.

All head coaches are type A egomaniacs. Don't read too much into things they do based on protecting their ego/pride. It's who they are, it's in their DNA.

  • I talked to a former starter who played under both Weis and Kelly recently and he said that Weis was a great guy and, in his opinion, cared for the players way more than Kelly. He said that Weis "didn't care what people thought outside the program," but that he was totally different inside the wall of ND. The guy we saw was a persona. It changed my perception of Weis.

    Wes Morgan

  • I'll take a coach that cares more about winning than having his players like them. The respect and good feelings will come later. Leahy's players and Lombardi's players didn't care for them while playing, but loved them when celebrating all the wins years later.

    Brian Smith?

  • If you remove the win/loss record, I have more of a problem with Weis AFTER he left ND than when he was there.

If it was Brian Smith i personally wouldn't take his opinion to heart we all know he had a hard one for Kelly, No offense Wes but i wouldn't take a players opinion to heart that only spent 1 year with Kelly. We all know how attached players get to coaches so when a new regime comes in theres going to be hard feelings.

  • In male psychology there are two types of figures that a young man needs as he matures into adulthood. 1. a "father" figure who cares 2. a mentor who does not. Great college coaches must be more mentor than father figure.

Whoever that starting athlete is ...he just confirmed why Weis was not effective at the college level in terms of winning football. However, he was greatly effective in many other areas as faculty representing ND.

You don't know the player's situation, and I don't want to say anything else that he told me in a private conversation because it would be easy for everyone to guess who it is. But it wasn't a matter of liking Kelly or not for this guy, it was a matter of Kelly not caring about players as much as Weis apparently did. And this former player is not the only one who has told me the same thing.

The point (based on the original post in this thread) is that Weis was a different guy than he was perceived to be by the outside world. I don't think it's necessary for every player to view Kelly as a buddy or vice versa. But another player told me that when he got hurt, he didn't exist anymore in Kelly's world. Not a single word was spoken by Kelly to this player from the time he got hurt to the time he left Notre Dame. This player said he received at least five phone calls from Weis within two weeks of the injury.

I'd like to think that these guys know more about what goes on behind the scenes than the rest of us.

  • Wes,

I agree im sure they do know more all i'm saying is a player from the previous coach might clash with the "new" coach coming in.

It could also be spun to what reports have been of CW's players being soft. if that injured player didn't get nurtured the way CW did he would automatically feel he was being mistreated.

Its time for our players to stop being so sensitive and start acting like football players. They have a job to do. I mean really this is what college football has come down to???? These guys need to realize this isn't a beauty pageant .

Also this is a perspective from a 20 something "KID" that was probably highly touted coming out of high school. It seems it was a attention thing.

Players said the same thing about Lou Holtz when he was the head coach. Once you were injured, you were dead to Holtz. Your point is?
