Charlie Weis - And why I will always be a fan...

  • There where many things that Weis did that will make it hard for people to like him. He was a Jersey guy, cocky, arrogant, or whatever. Me, I remember the things like the first 2 BCS games, the effort put into recruiting, his love for ND, Pass Right, and this - Hannah's House (See photo below)

In the photo you will see Charlie standing by 2 special needs girls, the one on the right is my cousin who is got the opportunity to be a part of the house. I literally just found this photo tonight, but what it reminded me of the side of Charlie that many people didn't see. The compassionate part of him who cares about people who have very few people who look out for them. Charlie invested millions of dollars into helping those are are some of the least fortunate around us and who have the least amount of potential to ever give back anything to him other than their appreciation, joy, and happiness.

One of the true measures of someone's character is what they do when no one is looking. Another is what they do for those who can not give anything back in return. In many instances those who are special needs can neither give back, nor do people see what you are doing, other than people know of Hannah's House. Say what you want about Charlie, but I will always be a fan, because of what he has offered for my cousin and those who have similar needs.

  • great post

  • Good post parrott84! I remember getting the impression that numerous players weren't exactly fans of Weis the coach. But I never got the impression that he was anything less than a standup human being.

  • I am really glad to see someone finally saying some nice things about Charlie Weis on this board. I never understood the anomosity towards him. He is a good man as is exemplified by his work with charity. He ran the program to the highest of standards (recruited good kids who graduated) and worked his tail off for the program despite crippling physical pain. Unfortunately he wasn't able to turn the program around. It wasn't from a lack of effort and he was a Notre Dame guy. He also never had things like a training table, which is kind of hard to believe and could help explain the second half collapses in his last 2 years. I am not saying he shouldn't have been dismissed, but I think he should be treated with a certain amount of respect for his efforts and his accomplishments. He did get us to 2 BCS games, ran the program with integrity and upgraded recruiting.

Run the ball. Stop the run. You win, or lose, up front.

  • If I remember correctly he got us to two BCS games his 1st 2 years. With or without his players. BK maybe you could use this as a Benchmark. Because looking at our schedule next year it look's to me 8-5 would be a good year in your 3rd Year. But is that really good enough. Some people will say the talent wasn't at ND when BK got there. But Charlie wasn't loaded with talent either.Good luck to Charlie and Dayne I'll be cheering for you to succeed and yes I will be cheering for Notre Dame

  • Too bad he didn't start at Kansas first. I always liked him off the field. He helped ND in more ways then most want to admit. EE and the Gug, recruiting are all better. I know someone who has personally benefited from Hannas house.

Foundations are a great thing for the community and it's great that coaches at universities across the country get into it. I hope everyone on B&G supports some type of beneficial organization.... Get out and donate...
