Column: Irish Independence Is Safe

Playoff proposal bodes well for Notre Dame independence.

  • I never saw this as a threat to our football independence at any time. The only way we relinquish that is if we fail to keep a conference home for our non-football sports, thus forcing our hand to join an all sports conference. ND football will always be welcome at the bowl table because of our drawing power for tickets/tv. The AQ conferences have already proven they cannot keep any school from gaining access to the BCS bowls/championship equation. If anything, the BCS era has improved access for those schools.

My luck w/the Irish 18-6...GO IRISH!!!

  • Only one quibble----I think ND, next round, must improve its chances to
land in quality bowls without having to "win it all." In the '70s, '80s and early '90s,
we were able to land in a "January 1st" type bowl even though we had two or three losses ("Cheerios" bowl anyone?). Gradually, its become all or nothing for ND--win 12, you're fine; win 8 or 9 and you're relegated to San Antonio.

I agree, i would like us to have better access to other bowls besides the BCS games if we dont qualify. Lets see what happens.

    First time POTW for 4/18/2011-4/24/2011.

Most if not all of them have conference affiliation now so it will be tough.

  • How about the 4 Major bowls host the top 8 teams (use the BCS formula to figure out the top 8, That way the teams that play a tough schedule would get credit over guys that schedule cupcakes for the first games of the season). Have them scheduled 2 games on the Eve and 2 on New years Day. This will give us the top 4 winners. Put them in a semi & a final for the Championship. The bowls would rotate in who held the 1 vs. 8, 2 vs. 7, etc. like in Basketball. The Semis and Final could be bid out to different cities like the Final Four. This way everybody gets some action.

  • I really feel we should give up independence and join the ACC. It will be a great conference for all our sports. The ACC boast a number of top flight academic institutions, some of which are private schools. If we can get a conference affiliation that gets us games up and down the east cost ( Boston, NY, NC, Atlanta, Miami) with 7 or 8 games, we can still schedule Navy, USC, Stanford and maybe rotate some Big 10 schools, like Michigan and Michigan St and Purdue.

Its clear that the ACC would be an upgrade for all our other sports. The Big East is not what it was. Even basketball, which is the Big East's best sport, would be upgraded in the ACC. All other sports would face top competition and enjoy travel to warm weather sites, Like Miami and Talahassee.

I know a lot of people will disagree with me about this, but the need to stay independent is right up there with our need to hold on to other traditions that don't mean much to today's kids, like no jumbotron and crappy grass in stadium.

  • Sorry to sound like a smartarse, but I just don't think there's much cachet to being an 8-5 team in a basketball conference. I think the simple answer is to win games, and the luster will be there, independent or not. Other issues will determine the need to join a conference, and I don't know enough about them to comment.
