Eerie (Pa.) Cathedral Prep all-state kicker John Chereson claims he has been offered a preferred walk-on spot with the Irish as a kicker.

The Class AAA football powerhouses around the state were loaded with Division I talent this fall.
Cathedral Prep quarterback Damion Terry, however, stands alone.
Terry was named the Class AAA player of the year and Prep coach Mike Mischler was named Class AAA coach of the year as the Pennsylvania Sports Writers Class AAA and AAAA all-state teams were announced Thursday.

Did he do any punting?
Isn't being offered a Preferred Walk-on kind of like, "If you can get in Notre Dame, and your parents can afford it, we'll let you come to practice"?
Basically saying if he chooses to try and walk on he will make the team. They may try to slide him a academic scholarship of some sort if he qualifies.
I think so.
My friend at ND was offered at Illinois and Iowa and a handful of other Big10 and beyond schools. He wasnt at ND. He came anyway and tried to earn a scholly(smart dude, REALLY smart in fact) and came from a wealthy family. So Im sure it was pretty similar to this case.
BTW, as for my friend, unfortuantely, my friend blew out his knee in Spring of 1987 just when he was looking at joining Andy Heck as the second TE in double tights sets and stuff. Pretty sure a kicker wouldnt have to worry about that too much though. :)
So as a Preferred Walk-on you're not thrown an extra bone or two? Like, some sort of small academic exception that a scholarship athlete may get? Get your pick of numbers? Anything?
Didn't we only have 82 on scholarship going into this season? If so, did kelly give any PWO's a scholarship?
I mean, I dont know. Anything he told me about that, I forgot about.
But I can say that this guy didnt need any exceptions, he was really smart and wealthy. And I never asked him where he stood in the pecking line for numbers. He was just focused on earning his way up to a scholarship so he could feel that he accomplished his goal. And he was well on his way until the knee blew out. And after that, he didnt much like talking about football or his decision to come to ND and accomplish it, he was pretty bummed out. So, we didnt ask.
As a preferred you will make the team whereas other walk ons are guaranteed anything. Then, like Chris Salvi, you can try to earn a scholarship.

It's more like if you can afford it, want student loans, or you have other scholarships we'll lower the standards and we'll save a spot for you on the team.
