It looks as though Notre Dame is on the national SI cover for the first time since 2002 (previous two were regional). Check out this line:
"The Irish are marching onward to the national championship game – and downward from the moral high ground they have claimed for a century."
As Lou has mentioned in his diagnosis of Notre Dame being "back", the media must declare ND has sold its soul for football glory. Count it.
Following a wild weekend of upsets in college football, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish are ranked No. 1 in the BCS standings for the first time in school history, and No.1 in the Associated Press poll for the first time since November 1993. This rise to the top lands them on the cover of this
Lou has so many feathers in his cap that Chief Sitting Bull is in awe of his headgear.

um, what??? 'The Irish are marching onward to the national championship game – and downward from the moral high ground they have claimed for a century. ' So now that we're number one, because we're number one, we lost our moral compass?? We have to sell our souls to the devil to be good at football?? ARE YOU KIDDING ME?? Just because we try to do things the right way (97% GSR), and are still able to put a great football product on the field, does not mean we lost our morals. Are we perfect? NO! ND is vulnerable, just like all institutions, to all the cheating and things that don't belong in the college athletics. But that doesn't mean that we need to cheat to be good at football! And why are these sorts of comments coming out now? Coincidence it's the same week that we are number 1? I don't think so... Instead of celebrating the fact that ND, with its high academic requirements and standards, is still able to compete for championships (also a shout-out to schools like Stanford and Northwestern that also have high academics combined with good if not great football and athletic programs), the media decides to bash ND. Shame on you! The moment a school succeeds doing things the right way, there must be something wrong and so we make blind accusations. So, instead of holding other schools to a higher standard of education for their student-athletes, we try to bring down those that already do.
May there be a day when a high graduation rate and good performance in college athletics is the norm and not the exception. A day when a student that decides to attend a certain college to wear their colors and represent their name, can be sure he/she will leave with an education and a degree from that same university.
