Irish head coach Brian Kelly said in no uncertain terms this week that senior Tommy Rees is Notre Dame's first option at quarterback heading into the 2013 season.
"Everett won't be with us in the fall, so I've always moved forward," Kelly said. "I don't live in the past, I don’t spent too much time in the future, I live in the present. And the present is, I've got Tommy Rees, who was a starter for us, established player, and he’ll be our starter. And we think that Andrew Hendrix and Malik Zaire are guys that can contribute. But Tommy will be our starter."
This should not come as a large surprise, seeing as how he has 18 career starts and Hendrix and Zaire have combined for none. It is, however, different than what he told media on a conference call last week about the current pecking order of the Irish quarterbacks.
I believe! Go Irish!

Take care of the football and win games is all I ask.

As long as the other two do indeed get to contribute, we may be OK. Rees just can't be in there all game, every game. Too much of a liability.
Definitive answer, no questions heading into the summer.....I like it.
You wanted your ball back Tommy, well it's yours. Now go do something with it.

Why name the starter so early and allow other teams to prep for TR.
IMO our opponents could figure it out all by themselves so its better to settle it now rather than worry about the opponents. This will give Tommy great confidence.
I believe that Tommy is going to surprise us this year. I think his experience will greatly help, I also believe that he will move better in the pocket and he will obviously have some great backs and receivers.
At least 9-3 and even maybe 10-2
Maybe Kelly was throwing his old pals at the Grand Rapids Press a bone, but I don't understand why he said a week ago it was an open competition and then definitely named Rees the starter at a charity event.
BK saying anything else would have been a 'large surprise' - we pretty much knew that Zaire wasn't going to be a rs after the EG affair. I pray for a legit strong rushing attack(and no injuries to TR) especially against good defenses - man I hope Coach Harry has our oline mean & nasty to attack! GO IRISH!
"Tommy can you hear me" if you are the starter I need you to lead the Irish over both michigan and Michigan State.
Talk about the stars aligning for Tommy. The table is set. Someone else's misfortune becomes someone's opportunity. Now its' up to Tommy. He is rewarded for his program loyalty. Go for it young man !!!
boy, that open competition at QB sure did'nt last long. i'm ok with this, as long as rees does not revert to turnoveritis. but if he does and BK does not have hendrix ready, it's all on kelly......
Run the ball.
Stop the run.
You win, or lose, up front.
True - betting that TR will go through this season injury free makes it an absolute must that BK has AH ready and Zaire, no doubt, will get his turn - all hands on deck! Geez that EG snafu really has created alot of angst. GO IRISH!
Water is wet. There wasn't really another realistic option. Rees will play and play well.
