Including the two freshmen running backs, the talent is there. However, due to their inexperience, the concern will be how many times they fumble. ( of course, where and when is important also, but there is no way to analyze that) Last year, ND only lost 7 of 19 fumbles. It is probable that these new running backs fumble more than last year's group especially since GA is not known to have the greatest hands. Let's hope that this is just a concern and does not come to fruition.
Backfield a concern, wr's a concern. lb's a concern, db's a concern, football team as a whole is a concern.

POTW 12/23-12/29, 2013
The team will be fine. Trust the system and stop worrying. The coaches will have them ready.
The sky is falling!!!!!
Please tell me what is wrong with our team. I know how I feel. Judging by other posts on the Roundtable, plenty of others think we should be in pretty good shape. I'm just curious as to what you see that makes you so uncomfortable with our team
3 time POTW
Coach will not tolerate fumbling. Senior or freshman the same. I am not concerned about it.

agree with this. BK will not tolerate turnovers.
and to the original poster, why are worrying about these type of things 5 months before the season? you know that recruiting is falling apart and is the thing to worry about 9 months before signing day,
Sometimes fumbles tend to be associated with running backs. Most of the fumbles at ND the past two years have been at QB.
One of the most amazing stats last season is an ND running back did not lose a fumble in the first nine games of regulation time. The first occurred by Cierre Wood at the goal line in overtime against Pitt. The following week at BC, both Riddick and Atkinson lost their first fumbles of the year.
Likewise, in 2011 only two of the 12 fumbles lost by ND came on running plays. The first was the infamous one by Jonas Gray near the South Florida goal line that was returned for a score. Wood lost two that season, but one came on an incomplete screen pass against USC that was ruled a backward lateral.
no one breaks down the numbers nor provides historical perspective like Lou S. great job.
I honestly have no worries about our backfield.
We have 5-6 players to choose from at RB. Who did we lose at WR who is irreplaceable?
ND returns 3 of 4 starting LBs and has Calabrese, Williams, Council, not to mention Smith, arguably the best high school LB in the land.
DB is a concern? Really? ND returns 3 of 4 starters and is as deep there as at anytime in the 40 odd years I have been following ND football. Sheesh. How about some Prozac?
OK. Right Now today, who is ND starting running back. Atkinson is not a true running back. So that takes care of running back. Know one knows right now. You must not have been watching ND's defensive backfield if you think this is as deep as a def. backfield thay have had in the last 40 years. What a joke! Eifert was the best receiver ND had last year. None of the others were a real to go to receiver, just like right now. Calabrese could not start for any other top 10 team at LB. Ishaq is slow and clumsy. This is not good when a true freshman is your best LB.
So now. How about facing reality.
What is a "true running back?" Seems pretty circular to say that a running back is not a true running back because he's not.
Your reality and my reality are clearly very different.
you fumble, you don't play
you don't fumble you might play.
Check out the fumbles by Golson in the second half of the year.
These coaches are good, and they now have the depth to enforce their principles.
The reality is every team has holes to fill including ND. You seem to highlight the worst possible scenario for every position group you mentioned.
ND has a ton of talent and should at least be in a BCS game. You can revel in the doom and gloom. I expect big things in 2013.
How long have you been a fan of college football? Is this your second year?

I'm concerned with the backfield as well. We have so much talent we will struggle to recruit the elite backs for a couple seasons due to lack of playing time that will be available.
(P.S.- Carlisle will start if he stays healthy by the way. Kelly loves that kid for a reason)
5 Time POTW--Gringo Mafia Director of Guerrilla Warfare
i think carlisle may start in the slot position, but his injury history suggests he cannot handle full time RB reps.
I'm willing to look past the collarbone injury. It happens a lot for no apparent reason. We'll see in August
are you gonna look past the ankle and knee injuries the last 2 years also?
playing the slot would take away the pounding of running between the tackles and increase the chances of carlisle playing more often.
And don't forget the band. I think we're very thin at trombone this year.
Cheerleaders could be a concern, too. I'll look into that myself.
I may not be pretty, but I'm fast.....
POTW 1/31/11 - 2/6/11
No. The ankle injury was complicated with nerve damage. The knee injury wasn't serious. The only major setback he has had is the ankle.
true, the ankle injury was the only serious injury, however the frequency of injury is very high. at his size and considering his frequency of injury, BK will place carlisle in the slot, imo.
How would you know GAIII isnt a true RB ? Kid hasnt had the chance to be givin legit practice reps til this year... And goin behind an Oline like ours, whoever is back there is gonna have some lanes to run through... Amir is a stud, Greg Bryant and Tarean Folston will make the coaches play them
BJax and KRuss both return and played every game last year... Plus Lo Wood is back Plus an incoming stud Cole Luke... Not an issue.
Safety... Loaded for days
LB, yea we lose Teo, but were gaining a werewolf, every player on the team, including coaches but all coaches say positive things on their players, but every player is bringing up Jarrett Graces name when they arent even being directly asked about him.. Fox n Carlo both back, not elite but are 5th year guys and know the game like the back of their hand
Sheldon Day is really good... Eddie Vanderdoes is gonna put our Dline over the top this year..
We are just gonna have to wait and see
