We'll have a feature of George Atkinson III on the home page in a few hours. I figured this would almost certainly elicit questions about fan favorite Cam McDaniel's current standing. So this is a pre-emptive strike.
Had a chance to ask Tony Alford about McDaniel's role in the offense this year. This was before Amir Carlisle's broken collarbone, so we didn't talk much about the possibility of Cam sliding to more of a slot receiver role or getting looks there in the spring. I wouldn't be shocked it Carlisle's injury gets him a few more reps in that area. But here's what Alford had to say:
"He’s a hard working hard-nosed kid. Absolutely there’s going to be a place for all these guys in this offense. There’s going to be a place for all of them, and they’re all going to have roles in some capacity. They will define, now and in the summer, what that role is but there is no doubt that Cam can make plays. He’s made plays.
"He’s another guy that is just understanding the big picture and the fine points of our offense and working on his skill set. He’s very much the same, and has a lot of the same attributes with Geroge that we’re talking about. We’re talking about guys that everybody knows about, but they haven’t really played a lot. That’s my job, to coach them that way and to get those things and get them so they are speaking the same language."
toughest pad-down inside runner we have. not really scat-quick or a slasher. just a grinder who wants to put his knee pad inside you're eye socket. hope to see more of him, certainly in the red zone......GA more of a slot guy.
Run the ball.
Stop the run.
You win, or lose, up front.
I would love to see more PT for him. Great determination!
It's just nice to see a players name in a subject line without the "T" word to follow!
I'm going to get mauled for this but I don't care: Cam McDaniel is a better complete RB than George Atkinson. McDaniel is quick, good in tight quarters, and extremely tough. Atkinson is fast, but his lateral quickness is sorely lacking. He nearly comes to a stop when he cuts, and the most recent practice video showed he's still a liability in that regard. He is deadly in open space but not equipped to carry the ball 20 times a game. There is definitely a spot for GAIII in this offense, but not as a between-the-tackles starting RB. I am not stating that McDaniel should be taking all carries away from Atkinson, but their distribution should be more like 50/50 and not 90/10. I still think Atkinson looks like a WR playing RB. If we need to convert a 3rd and 4, I'd look to McDaniel first. I put my complete trust in the coaching staff to dish out touches, but that's my outsider view. I think Greg Bryant is going to bring the best of both worlds.

Hopefully GAIII develops under Alford's tutelage, but as of right now, can't argue going with Cam on 3rd and short.
Bryant and Folston will see minutes early.
Mauled by slaps on the back my friend. I'd like to see Cam get a lot more touches as well.
