Since 1997, he had been at Notre Dame the longest among any assistants, 8 seasons from 1997-2004 during some tough times.
Michigan football defensive coordinator Greg Mattison has agreed to a three-year contract extension, athletic director Dave Brandon announced today. Mattison is entering the final season of his original three-year deal, and the extension will keep him with the Wolverines through the 2016 season.
Well deserved, indeed!
Quick story: Coach Mattison gave me a call directly after I played in a local all-star game my senior year of high school. We had a tight end on our team that was headed to play Div. 1-A ball at a school and even though I made the game as a defensive end, the all-star coaches decided to use me on both sides of the ball for the second half. Coach Mattison got a call from a coach that was at the game from the kid's program saying how well I did, and I can still remember getting that call as soon as I got home (pre-cell phone days).
Jump ahead 13 years -- I was talking to Michigan commit Dymonte Thomas after the U.S. Army All-American Bowl in San Antonio when his coach approached him to say Coach Mattison was on the phone and wanted to talk to him.
Still working as hard as ever on the recruiting trail...

Since he has been coaching against ND at Florida and at Michigan, he is not a favorite of mine. I was hoping that he would be old enough to retire soon so he would not be recruiting against ND any more. He is too good at recruiting.
