Saw this tweet from Richard Obert a few minutes ago.
@azc_obert Davonte' Neal will wear Michael Floyd's No.3 at Notre Dame. Has been a mentor leading to Feb signing and after. Neal wore 3 at Chaparral HS.
I thought Amir Carlisle was wearing number three. Is Amir going to change numbers? If not than it looks like the staff is going to play him at CB. While he is a good CB I would love to see his speed used on offense. Could make a very early impact on the offensive side of the ball. Any insight on this Jason/Lou?

I would think that our numbers/talent level at the CB position are in such dire need, that utilizing Mr. Neal on D would be the logical choice right now. Hopefully this class will bring some serious talent at CB and Devonte can start using his speed on both sides of the ball. Until then, I think he's strictly a CB. Either way, I don't think there's any way you can keep him on the sidelines and when he matures, I can see him playing both ways. Long way to go but you don't win the Mr. Football Award in the state of AZ twice unless your talent level is in the top 1% or higher.
Looking forward to seeing Devonte play!
Upon signing Neal Kelly said that he's too good to not have the ball in his hands which leads me to believe he plays the slot receiver position. After next season Toma graduates and Neal could be the full time starter. Secondly, K. Russell and Procise at safety would be better alternatives to switch to corner in my opinion.
I expect we'll use Neal in ST. I could see him returning kickoffs and returning punts. I also expect him to get some dime package exposure and as mentioned some snaps as a the slot man. He could easily see the field 10 plays a game this year if he develops quickly.
Davonte Neal does want to wear three and told me that some time back. With upperclassmen usually having dibs, Amir Carlisle has the number for now.
Maybe they can race for it...

LOL....Neal will see a lot more than 10 plays per game.
He also will be wearing #3
When I talked to Luke Neal last he wasn't positive it the number situation would work out, but they were still looking into it. I'll check in to confirm if something has changed there.
I'm not going to share the premium info of the competition just saying it was confirmed he will wear #3
Sorry guys, but really, does it matter that much if he wears #3 or #76?
Flip a coin, pick a # from a hat.. just put the jersey on, strap your helmet and line up in whatever position best suits the team and matches with your own development for your future.
On that topic, I do not see how Devonte Neal does not at least play defense part time. Nickelback, press M-T-M(the kid is dynamite there from what I have seen of the tapes from him guarding the tops of the West, he makes shadowing them look easy).
ALL of them can play and no one would question why any of them would be on the field(Maybe Russell at this point)
Assuming the staff holds Slaughter at Safety and not CB, I dont see how this barebones group doesnt get torn to shreads by almost a handful of QBs next year. He'll be over there at some point.
"Devonte, when Theo, Cierre and Robbie graduate coupled with Butler, Kinlaw and an ELITE CB that we'll bring here, we'll shift you back over to Off and only use you in situations on D when we need to put an opposing WR on "Devonte Island" But for now, be ready to play CB".
You would be surprised how important jersey numbers are to kids
