How many of you feel that giving Alabama the ball first was a big mistake?
GOD..COUNTRY..NOTRE DAME... THEN HUNTING
I loved it, said so to my buddy sitting next to me at the game. This team was built on its defense this year, put them out there to start. I also really like having the ball after the half, mostly because it's a killer when a team finishes the half and scores and then gets the ball to start the 2nd half.
Good point, looking back it easy to be a coach from the tv set.
I like to defer and get it in the second half. I dont think it had any effect on last night, it was just a whoopin.
Two time Poster of The Week, 2011 and 2013.
I usually say defer but with this game I thought it would be best to try to get the first points on board to settle players & show we can score on them. I'm not trying to be armchair coach just saying
Not I. I would have deferred if given the option. I was confident that our D would hold them and force a punt. I was wrong on that point.
I think they should have taken the ball. The crowd was electric and no better way to start then score a td which is what bama did and that killed us
1>it is easy to be right 100% after the fact.
2>ND's strength was the D and that was what kelly put on the field first.
3>most top coaches defer if they have a great D(i know it is pro, but the Pats deferred 29 times in a row at 1 point).
4>the chances of ND stopping ALA's O were greater than ND's O scoring against ALA's D, imo.
5>kelly counted on what got him the NC game and they could not stop the ALA O.

For ND THIS year, defer was the best option. They would get the ball to start the second half and it would put their best unit on the field to start the game. Defense was their identity. They expected to be able to come out and shut down Bama's O to set the tone. It didn't happen and no choice on the coin flip would have change what Bama did last night.
Agreed with deferring 100%..
There was no other choice to be made. We had the number one scoring defense in the country this year and hadn't allowed an offensive TD drive of more than 75 yards all season. It was the easiest decision of the night for our coaching staff. We had rode our defense to almost all of our 12 victories this season, you MUST stick with what has buttered your bread all along. If you're questioning that, you have issues.
