The man has done well for himself since the ND debacle in December 2001. How do you think he would have fared at Notre Dame, and how many years would he have been here?
Central Florida is working on a two-year contract extension for football coach George O'Leary that would keep him under contract through the 2017 season.
Lou, it's the type of question you can only answer with gut-level speculation, but I'd say there's a good chance he would have been better than Davie, Willingham and Weis, but not so good as Kelly. But, that's just a guess. As far as how long he would have stayed, he would have gotten five. Anything more than that would depend on the kind of specific results that are too hard for me to conjure out of thin air.
I may not be pretty, but I'm fast.....
POTW 1/31/11 - 2/6/11
I sort of lumped O'Leary, Tom O'Brien (then at BC) and Ty Willingham in the same category at that time when I had my list of potential successors: The proverbial "solid" coaches (sort of like the "solid" recruit) but had some skepticism on whether they could take ND to that consistent BCS-caliber level. Among the three, I thought Ty had the most potential upside. Quite wrong on that because I had no idea he would be such an ineffective recruiter.
Hands down better than Ty, Bob for sure. Man am glad those embarrassments are gone.

He would have been better than TY i think, but i wasn't sold on him when we hired him. I don't think he would have flourished.

I would think that he was not the guy that would have lead us to the NC game, but I really don't think that we would have sunk to the depths we did. He would have recruited better than Ty.
Truthfully, it is a great question that we might not know the answer to. Not sure that BK would be the coach right now if he were hired back in the day.

He would have been outstanding. It has been awhile ago, but I think he still may have been our coach, or left on his own volition due to burn out.
With all that said, and it took forever to get here, I honestly would not trade Coach Kelly for anybody. I'm very happy with where our program stands. Fun to speculate though....

I wasnt impressed by O'Leary. But looking at things now this is what his staff would have looked like. I dont think he would have had as much success as CW's first two years but who knows but overall I think we would have been a solid 8 win team.
