Only one man's opinion. I believe putting Watt at center would equalize the offensive line. You would have experience on the outside and inside teaching the new guards how to play. Having a new center, where Martin will probably end up starting, can be difficult. Just saying. The line could look like this: LT-Z Martin., LG-N Martin., C-Watt., RG-Hanratty., RT-Lombard. This to me would be the best offensive line. How about it?
That was tossed around as a possibility, but I think the Irish staff wanted to do everything they could to keep Watt and Zack Martin together on the left side of the line. Kelly said the idea of sliding Watt inside came up informally while talking with some of his assistants, but they seem to be pretty happy with what they are getting out of Nick Martin at the moment. He might be an emergency option, but if they can keep him at guard they will.

IIRC, watt was tried at OC earlier in his career and had troubles snapping the ball.
plus, how would the opposing D know which side ND was gonna run the ball on all key plays if watt/zmart were not together?
Seems to me Harry Hiestand was rather emphatic---when asked this very
question, he said: "why would you ever do that."
I go with what the offensive line coach says.
I asked that question of Hiestand this month and this was his response:
“I don’t know why you’d want to do that. Chris and Zack have a tremendous chemistry together … if we felt like Chris was our next best center and that we’d be a better team with him at center, then we’d do it. But Nick (Martin) and Matt (Hegarty) are making good progress to where we’re not feeling like, “Geez, we’re really struggling at that position.’ If we were really struggling at that position, it might be a consideration.”
^^^^^exactly. besides, n. martin is cut from the same tough cloth as his brother. with the right teaching, he'll be more than fine at center, and hopefully about 25 lbs heavier.....
Run the ball.
Stop the run.
You win, or lose, up front.
I thought Watt to Center made sense because you would prefer a veteran starter at that key position, but, Nick Martin has played some and projects well and having Zack and Chris on the left side gives us a powerful left side of the line to run behind and protect Golson's blind side. Additionaly, if Watt was moved to Center you would have the same non-experience problem next year. Now we have Nick, Heggarty, and maybe Harrell possibly playing and being set there for a few years.
