Beat USC. . .AND . . .UM, as the way you have framed the question, Lou, both can be achieved even if you only opt for the USC answer. C requires a double beat, but you could still have a split, even if you choose B, and, in that case, a loss to MSU would be, for me, more palatable than one to UM.
